Fresh Start on Tech Session

Just thought that I'd start a fresh thread. So, it sounds like we are on and it will be at Brian's place.
821 Dock St.
Tacoma WA
206 819-7020

From Portland that is:
I-5 N North to Seattle - go 139 mi

Take the I-705 N exit 133 to City Center - go 0.2 mi

Bear left onto the ramp to City Center/Tacoma Dome - go 0.5 mi

Merge into I-705 N - go 1.3 mi

Take the exit to Schuster Pkwy. - go 0.2 mi

Bear right at Pacific Ave - go 0.2 mi

Turn right at S 4th St - go 0.1 mi

Bear right at E Dock St - go 0.3 mi

We can provide torque wrenches and ????

Since there is a chance that there will be a need for "buckets" to adjust valves should we try and gather some to bring with us? Mine needed 2 at the 12K service.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks Art,
I was planning on waiting till monday to get desired buckets from the dealer. But if anybody has some on hand that would be GREAT!!!! Do I need a special feeler guage? It seems I can't find mine anyway.I guess if anyone needs anything special, Now would be the time to say so. I am still waiting on a bunch of parts from Chicago BMW. I may have to make a last minute run to the dealer. Thanks for the help with the address Art. I tried to post a map last night but it did not go well. Once again my Phone # is 206 819-7020 (cell) My address is Foss waterway marina and I'll be at garage # 59 S 4th st is at a traffic light right after passing UNDER some elevated roads. If you pass the grain elevator you have gone to far. 4th goes over the train tracks and turns into dock st. Turn left at the marina sign and right at the office. 2nd right is where you will find #59. They are all labeled so its easy once you get here.

Cool Feeler Guages

Brian, I will bring my Feeler Guages up just in case as well as the Torque Wrenches. And, if I remember, a couple of spare Buckets!

John,
I guess that means you can make it. Thats great! I have pushed my luck. The Bike has about 31k now and Ive never checked the valves. Hopefully all are good. Thanks for the feeler guage and buckets. Is Ernie going to be able to make it?

Brian..

Saturday at what time? Just trying to time the border. I always get held at US Immigration for at least 1 hour, and it's roughly only 235km from there.

BTW... I aint no genius when it comes to tearing the LT down. I'm there to learn.

Cheers

Question Saturday Tech Session??

Ed, sure would love to meet you at the Tech Session, but if you cruise down on Saturday you'll be a day early! The Session was planned for Sunday to my knowledge. I'm sure Brian will chime in shortly with the real day since it is at his place, but if it has switched to Saturday then I will not be able to make it since I am traveling back from Reno that day.

Brian, are you there?

(Heading for work, check back later this evening for the answer.)

Ed,
I think we were planning on Sunday. Anytime after 9am will work. Its quite the haul for you, So anytime you can make it is fine. I make it up to your neck of the woods a couple of times a year. Canadian customs are pleasant to deal with. US customs is a real pita!!!!

Breakfast anyone

No need to do all this thinking on an empty stomach.
The time to meet at Brians is now 9AM or so.
Anyone want to meet for breakfast first.
I'm open to whatever.
Maybe Brian knows of a good place close.

Actually I do. The dock st tavern has a great breakfast. Its in the big wharehouse looking building right after you cross the train tracks on 4th. Within walking distance to my place.I do not think it opens until 9am though. I have made up some breakfast burrito's for anyone who comes early and hungry. Slightly spicey, But I will make some coffee to wash it down with.

We'll have to see. We will be going Saturday night to the banquet for the RCMC Grand Tour. There is a chance I will be required to work Sunday, so I will be getting back to you on this weekends activities. Thanks for putting together the session and it would ne an honor to be included in this esteemed group of LT riders.

I'm heading up for the tech session, and doing the GT banquet the night before. I haven't yet decided where I'm staying Saturday (near Portland or closer to Tacoma), but I'll figure it out by then.

I'll probably head up on Friday, maybe as an SS1000. That gives me Saturday to recover, or as extra travel time if I just get sick of the ride or the wet (30-90% chance of showers along I-5, increasing as I head north).

It'll be fun regardless.

Any plans for the Portland contingent to group for the ride to Tacoma? Any times, rendezvous, formations, etc?

Talking Portland Group Rendevous?

Hey Art & Dan, where & when you want to meet? Art you know my sense of direction, so pick something easy to find! Or we could probably meet in Vancouver, even Dan's house! I figure we want an early start if we want to be up there by 9. Or is 10 better?

Lets talk!

I'm on lunch break right now, but will check back here this evening, so go ahead and post your thoughts.

Thumbs up Vancouver

You guys pick the time. At least we will get an extra hour of sleep by turning the clocks back Saturday night. We can meet at my house:

8911 NE 21st Ave
98665

Or here are a couple other choices:

1. Denny’s just off of I5 at the 78th Street Exit
7815 NE 6th Ave

2. Chevron Service Station just off of I5 at the 99th Street Exit
610 NE 99th Street

Both are on the west side of the freeway and a couple minutes from my house. If any of these will work, just let me know!!!

I think that John and I should meet Dan just off of I5 (not far enough off I5 to get lost). I'm game for whatever time we go.

We will be coming off of 405. So anything north of 405 to 5 intersection would be great.

Time & Place

Art & John,

How about meeting me at the Chevron Service Station (just off of I5 at the 99th Street Exit - 610 NE 99th Street) Between 6:45am - 7:00am. It is around 130 miles to Brain's house so that should put us in the time frame you mentioned John.

Earlier or later is fine with me. I will probably gas up there so I'm just being lazy.

Is this like 0700 in the morning? Well okay then that means that I need to be at your house by about 0615.

I have not printed out the directions or anything. Do you think that Betty can find her way

I like these little thingies that we can add

Hey John, give me a call Saturday before you go to the banquet if you can.

Hello all,
9am is a starting point, Don't feel obligated to get up at 4am to make it here!!! I get up at 4am everyday for work so I know what it feels like. for those attending that have never seen an LT naked, Your first will be shocking!! My bike will be mostly naked when you arrive so we have time to SEE the good stuff like like Fuel tank removal, fuel and air filter change. And of course valve adjustment. My throttle cables came in also. (mod to 2005 cables) Does anyone have a good funnel that works well with the LT? I changed my fluids tonight and It was a pita with the funnels that I have. I am sure someone will be doing a fluid change.

Sleepy sleepy

The extra hour due to the time change will help, but I don't have to get up as early as John & Art. So just let me know gentlemen, if you want to adjust the time.

Thanks for the warning regarding the nudity, Brian. I will probably have to cover my eyes at first, this being a strangers bike and all. I'll try not to get too embarrassed.

You might want to have some eye drops on hand in case anyone stares too long without blinking.

See you tomorrow!

Cool Portland Contingent Arrival

OK Brian, I'm a little ragged after getting back into town just this evening, and you heard Art's comments on the early hours, so I don't think you'll see us before 10:00!

Hi all,

I'm tucked into a quite motel near PDX, so I'll see y'all in the morning at the Chevron.

It sounds like the meeting time has adjusted to 7:45 - 8:00 a.m.

That gives us an extra two hours, including the time change. You did set your clocks back one hour already, right?

Weather.com says 30-40% chance of showers, so I'll have my wet gear on and ready.

John - I have your Grand Tour packet, so remind me and I'll hand it over to you.

Thumbs up Have Fun

Brian,

Have a fun time with your LT "undressed". It is unnerving the first time taking off the tupperware, but it will become second nature from here on out. I'll make the next session up there for sure.

Larry,
It was great to me you and Clayton. Also great to see the rest of you again. Thanks to you all for the help and expertise. Normally I do not trust people to work on my vehicles, I never felt the slightest worry. Really!!! Not even after hearing ah sh** a few times. I was hopeing some one else wanted to work on their bike, I guess its a good sign no one else needed anything done. I think I should be able to reassemble the bike also. After everyone left I pulled the exaust cam. I (we) decided to change all those buckets that were in tolerance but at the lower end. My harley friends will not believe we didnt drink any of the beer!!! Thanks again to all. We should get together a do a ride soon. And a special thanks to Ken Meese who found his way here from CA. and worked so hard on my bike!

It was good to see some old friends and new faces today. I also learned a few things today. Namely, that I'm glad the dealer changed my throttle cables under warranty. Next time should be much easier.

I hope Brian's bike goes back together without further incident.

I'm sure I'll find my way north again, hopefully with enough time to go for a ride on some of these great back roads I keep hearing about.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Smile Thanks Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the food and coffee. I learned a lot and appreciated the opportunity. I also got to see the value of lighting upgrades on the way home. It seems I must be the only K12 rider with standard lights. I felt like a fly on a lighthouse lense riding in front of all those HID lights in the dark. I have got to get me some on that.

Thanks again!!

Dan,
I am glad you had a good time. Stock lighting is a bummer. Learn something from my mistake, I bought a hid headlight. According to the website pictures the 6300k light was the brightest. NOT!!! Its a cool color but side by side with Ernie's and you could tell the difference like night and day. Buy the one with a heat range of 4100k-4300k. I just spent another 115 bucks getting a new bulb.(4300k) I now have a very expensive backup bulb!

Brian, enjoyed the chance to supervise Ken changing your throttle cables! And the fact that he was able to do it without removing the Fuel rail or Airbox, and without long needlenose or hemostats!! I am impressed Ken! Good thing we were all there to offer that very important "Supervision", eh?

Also good to meet some new folks as well as familiar faces. That is what these sessions are about as much as the actual Bike work.

Oh yeah, we really did not hit any hard rain till after our great dinner stop in Vancouver. Then it was like the Heavens came down all the way home! Glad to hear everyone made it home safely!

Well, theres trouble over here in the garage. I can not get the sprockets back on the cams. Obviously the 1st one goes on easy, But the 2nd one is about 1/4 to 1/3 hole off from making it. I Became fed up and went to dinner at rock pasta, 2 dollar microbrews on tuesday!!! I am thinking(hopeing) that the chain tensioner has not been backed off enough. Am I missing something else here?

Cool Cam Chain Tensioner

Brian, it sounds very much like what happened on Art's Bike. We had a heck of a time getting them to go back together. I'm pretty sure if you look in the front there you can see the actual shoe that is applying the pressure to the chain. What you need to be able to do is somehow press down on it and get the pin to go in far enough to hold the tensioner back.

Hopefully Art will chime in with his recollections of our experience in his garage a while back in case I am missing something here. Main thing is to relax. You haven't broke anything cause Art's Bike is still running fine and it sounds like the same thing. And once you do get everything back together, before you put that valve cover on, recheck your clearances for peace of mind.

Worst case is I'll come up there Friday or Saturday and give you a hand reassembling the mess! Just let me know which day works for you. Be patient and drive the cage for a day or so if need be!

Misaligned?

I think that we didn't have something quite aligned and it seems that it was the top gear wasn't quite far enough forward. I know that we played with the tensioner quite a bit but it was not the cause.

I do remember that once everything was aligned there really wasn't and real force required to get it back together.

What did you end up doing for buckets Brian?

Thanks for the help and offers, I have not given up yet! What do you mean by The top gear not far enough foward? I know it will be simple to fix this, Just got to figure it out. I gave up early partially because the red head came home and was causing me grief. Nothing new there........ I am in training today so I'll try back later.

Red face

Brian, on my lunch break here so I will check back after 4:00 to see if you saw this yet.

I think what Art is referring to is the fact that the gears, even though they are Tie-wrapped to the chain, still can be moved around a little. If either one of them is not quite right in ref to the other gear as well as the cams, things will not go together. I think a fresh approach with an alert, not tired, head will help things come together.

If not, my offer still stands, but just found out that I may have to work Friday after all. Saturday or Sunday is still a go though! Let us know.

I will work at it for a little tonight, Red will be home early today and will be working late the rest of the week. So, If not tonight tomorrow for sure. I asked my neighbor (the Bmw mech) and he said it should go on easily. He mentioned a couple small things that we did that wasn't the "best way" Then said it would be inappropriate for him to help??????? He was walking by my garage and I asked him for a clue, not to fix it. John,I'll keep you clued in.

Hello all,
The day started off badly today. I get to work and im scheduled to go to fall protection training. I am not a big fan of training. Ive been doing my job for over twenty five years and If I can't do it and do it safely I should be fired!!! Then my 25 minute commute turned into an hour and thirty minutes! So I get home armed with a #30 drill(for chain tensioner) and a torque wrench. Inserted drill bit while manipulating the tensioner. Adjusting lower cam with my knee on the wrench and walla!!!! 2 minutes and its done. I was so excited I forgot to remove the zip ties when moving the cam to recheck my gaps. I will post my final gaps and bucket usuage tomorrow. Thanks for the help and enjoy your dinner At camp 18

Talking Great news!

Brian, guess I don't need to cruise up there this weekend after all! I figured it would be easy once you got a fresh start. That seems to work well on a lot of things! As far as your BMW Tech buddy, remember that they are spoiled in the shop since they have all the official BMW Tools. Doesn't really require any ingenuity at all to simply follow the book and place the tools where they tell you. By getting through this you will understand the workings of the beast a lot better than even some of them will!

Will be interested in they rechecked valve clearances once you get them. Also, I'm not sure that we mentioned it, but you will need a little dab of High Temp RTV (Blue or Black works well) at the corners of the half moons according to the LT Manual. Not too much, or it could ooze into the valve train area.

Oh yeah, I wimped out on the Dinner tonight since I need to head out of town (again!) early tomorrow. Thought I might see what the home looked like for at least a night or two!
