Talking Iron Butt Training

Here are some training tips from one of the
experienced Iron Butt Rally riders. I thought that
everyone would get a kick out of them.
Jeff

Here are some extreme training ideas successful 2007
IBR applicants might consider:
- For those riding ST's, FJR's, or other "warm' bikes,
roast the crotch with a blow torch every few days to
build the appropriate scar tissue.
- Bring the bike into the house for the winter and sit
on it, instead of the couch, when watching TV. Be sure
to keep a death grip on the throttle. For
extra benefit, pour hot water down the pants to
duplicate that sweaty,
sticky, cooking in your own juices feeling.
- Sleep with the helmet on. Be sure to wear ear plugs,
too. With time this will build heavy calluses in the
ear canals to help avoid those nasty festering sores
during the rally.
- Practice making "U" turns often. Be sure to drop the
bike once in a while, during the process. This will
allow the rider to more efficiently go back
for those bonuses's or turns missed, during the rally.
- Practice plugging a tire, in the shower, with the
water running. For extra benefit, wear gloves and/or
turn the lights off.
- Push start the motorcycle every other start.
- Sleep in their boots. Of course, they must be wet.
- Practice deferring discharge of bodily waste as long
as possible. If they haven't waited until they are
hopping back and forth from leg to leg to maintain
control, they need to wait a bit longer. Hard core
riders might want to soil themselves once in a while
for maximum training benefit.
- Regularly spend time in a Sauna and a Steam Room in
full motorcycle gear, followed by a long jog, still in
full gear.
- If it rains, snows, hails, and if their area has a
tornado or hurricane warning in effect, go for a long
ride.
- Search out the archives and read again and again,
every past IBR report and lay awake numerous nights
dreaming, scheming, wondering and worrying
about what adventures the 2007 IBR might hold in
store.

Yep, all that sounds more and more true the longer I ride. Though I'll have to wait until at least '09 to get the full benefit of those pearls of wisdom.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Brian,
Not only "ear to ear" but "cheek to cheek " as I got the seat rebuilt on Monday! Wow, what a difference! 4000 plus miles and now the grimaces can turn to all grins. I have a new CeeBaileys windshield coming next week so I will be ready for "Iron Butt" time (sans the aforementioned training schedule! LOL)

How about we test the seat with a BBG? I need another Butt ride. I'm finally turning in my 2005 BtoB and BB paperwork (all appologies to the witnesses including you Jeff) to the IBA. How about a loop I84 to I15 to I90 back home? We'll see how that seat works.

I'm in for a BBG, depending on when, and if Jeff will promise to keep it to Warp 3 or less. I still need to get Afton, which is just under 800 miles from Ernie's. Do we feel lucky, or do we start somewhere slightly closer to 750?

Ernie and Ken,
Either sounds like a good plan depending on the time. Unfortunately I am tied up for the next three weeks (until the 24th) with planning/executing my mom's funeral and a seminar. Plus by then I will have my new CB windshield so I can do Warp 3 while trying to keep up with you guys in relative quiet!

Jeff,

Sorry I had to depart early on Sunday. Did you do a show and tell on your new ride! It would have been interesting to see all the new FJR riders and hear what they had to say about your new GT.

Sorry to hear about your mom, Jeff.

Lets keep tossing out dates and see if we can find something that works. I've never done an IB ride with others, but I respect what you and Ernie are capable of.

Steve,
Everybody just got up after eating and decided it was time to go, so other than Bill, no one even looked/commented on the GT. I know that I am sure enjoying it!
Thanks for the good wishes about my mom.
It was good to see you,
Jeff
