Smile The Big Ride

Starting to plan "The Big Ride" for about Sept 1st......................
Eugene, Oregon East on 2 to Bar Harbor Maine for a lobster dinner, then back on 20 to Eugene.
(We always travel 2 lanes when possible)
Any and all suggestions and "must sees" appreciated.
Karen still works so she flys into and out of Buffalo, NY , I'm retired so side trips welcome. If we should go someplace beside Bar Harbor to Experience it, please let me know.
Thanx for any

Route 20 through NY is a nice ride. It runs right along the top of the finger lakes and through all of the little towns there. Skaneateles, Waterloo and Canadegua are my favorites. It's easy to cut up to Buffalo from there too, about one and a half hour ride. Have a good time !

Route 20 in Mass, from Boston to West Springfield would be a drag, with hundreds of lights. Unless you want to see Cape Cod I would stay North and travel New Hampshire and Vermont. I use the Mass TPK and RT 128 to get around Boston when I head to Maine. In Southern New England a mix of interstate and state roads is best, depending on what you want to see. I consider RT 20 in Springfield and East, a city street most of the way to Boston. Let us know your interests on the "Right Coast" in Conn and Mass. I was born in Springfield MA and know it rains more in Eugene OR as I spent time in Seattle in the mid 80's during a Boeing assignment.

I grabbed RTE 2 in Montpielier VT, and then routed you down to 112 and the kancamangus over and across NH. After the kanc, up through Conway NH, and onto RTE 16, straight through the heart of the White Mountains. In Gorham NH, pick up RTE 2 again, and head into western maine. Rte 2 to Mexico ME and then due north on RTE 17 (this is called Height of Land) an absolutely gorgeous road up through the mountains and western lakes. Make sure you gas up in Mexico, its pretty empty up there until you hit Oquassoc and Rangely.

After Rangely, I have you headed up RTE 201, following the Kennebec River. This is where there are lots of white water rafting camps. pristine, and gorgeous, again, gas up before you get to the "oh darn point!"

After Jackman, take RTE 15 east into Rockwood, then on to Greenville. This area is literally loaded with MOOSE, drive carefully, and pay attention to the sides of the roads!! daytime driving only up here, after dark, the roads seem to come alive with deer, moose, and the occasional black bear.

Greenville to Dover Foxcroft, then down 11 into Bangor. From here you are headed down 15 to Bucksport, along the Penobscot river. I have you going into Stonington ME, but you can easily break off in Bucksport and hit Ellsworth and down to Mount Desert Island (Bar Harbor)

Take a peek, and I can tweak anything that you want. If you dont want the western Mtns of Maine, let me know, and i can take them off easily.

Allen: Let me know when time gets closer and I may take some time off from work and ride with you for a ways through NY. I would recommend Rt 104 (Seaway Trail)from Niagara to Oswego, skirting Lake Ontario. Then Ogdensburgh. Rt 3 over through the flatland into Rt 28 0r 30 through the Addirondaks. Catch the ferry across Lake Champlain into Vt and run Rt 9 to NH. Let me know what you think?
