Bye Bye Trunk top

Hello All,

During my recent visit to OKC, I had the chance to ride an LT w/out the trunktop. This bike handled so much better w/out that big box on top.. I have ordered myself a replacement rack and will be removing the box upon receipt.

Will re-install if S.O. wishes to ride..

Re: Bye Bye Trunk top

Mine would be coming off too if weren't for the SO getting on kinda frequently. She would be real suspicious of me trying to get her to go without a back rest. Too bad there isn't some kind of quick disconnect to pop them off & on real quickly.

Re: Bye Bye Trunk top

I always love the way mine handles with the top box removed. I feel like I'm at the wheel of a sports bike!

If I wasn't so addicted to the storage, I'd leave it off all the time. It really is handy, as I use the bike more than my car. I just don't think it looks as well though, with it removed. The box gives it a finished look, but I can live with that temporary. To those who have not ridden the bike without the top case, you're in for a treat.

Re: Bye Bye Trunk top

I just removed mine to ease access in my troubleshooting...haven't ridden it yet without the box...looks like I'll give it a whirl when I get it back from the dealer.

How does the stereo sound only coming from the front....just as good?

Thanks!

I removed my trunk a few weeks ago. Like you, I couldn't believe the difference it makes.
I installed the existing luggage rack W/O the trunk... see pic. Just received

When you removed the top box, did the existing luggage rack fit without having to re-drill holes?

Re: Bye Bye Trunk top

Dan, I did have to drill new holes. Also had to replace bolts on the front of rack, as the top box (original rack mounting location) is sloped. I used 6mm black studs for the front mounting bolts, and adjusted to a level height by using double nuts on the studs.
I was concerned the threaded studs would look "cheesy" but you have to look really hard to even notice the 1" extension. .

Also, I had to tap into the brake, tail light wires on the quick disconnect (under rear seat)to power the light bar. When I want to use the top box, the electrical disconnects are still functional, and the top box will cover the drilled holes.

The bike sure handles better w/o the trunk. Lucky to have access to this site, as I would have never thought about removing the trunk, without the knowledge of people (like you) on this forum.

Re: Bye Bye Trunk top

Thanks for the detailed information. I was hoping that that it would just slip in place, but knew better. It looks great and I might just do the same..
