Daytona 2009

Hey All,
Every year I get the itch to ride from NY to Daytona but all my buds tell me I'm outta my mind so I let it go. Has anyone made the trip in late Feb early Mar? Am I taking a major chance with the weather? Helpful advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Daytona 2009

Hi
I have made the trip Three times. First time, just cold weather.
The other 2 times I trailered. A good thing because it snowed on the way down and rain, lots of it on the way home.
If you have never done it before and like the challenge and boring I95 then go for it. You can someday tell your grandkids

Re: Daytona 2009

I used to do it from Michigan back in the early 70's,
one year the snow was to high and I stuffed the Harley in a van and drove to Washington DC
(had a friend stationed there) then rode down to Daytona.

If you're young (and a little dumb) it can be done,
you're gonna get wet, you're gonna get cold,
you're gonna have a blast.

Re: Daytona 2009

My wife and went to fla during bike week, left ct on bright and sunny day, we were driving a car and people on bike looked at us like we did not know how to live, we were missing something by not riding. By the time we got to washington dc, very light snow flakes falling from the sky. Another 25 miles you could not see 1/10 of a mile in front of the car. Bikers camped out under overpasses. Only two bikes along side of us, older BMW's. Snowed all the way to Jacksonville. Good luck on your ride.

Re: Daytona 2009

Rode down one year. We took a big chance and were able to keep ahead of the snow for the trip down. Once we were there it was great and camping was fun. On the way back our luck ran out and we got caught in some heavy snow and had to stop and hunker down for 3 days before it was clear enough for us to continue and even then there was ice everywhere.

From that point on I trailer the bike(s) to a friends house in SC and ride from there. Stress level is much better this way.

Hope you have a great time and don't forget the sun block at the track.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Daytona 2009

Thanks for all the stories. Did I mention that every year when I get this itch to ride to Daytona, I seem to regain my sanity with a little help from my friends. Thanks again.

Re: Daytona 2009

There's always Biketoberfest in October.... Same ride, a lot less chance of snow, still a pretty good party.

I would do it in a heartbeat. Skip I-95 though. Once you get past Philly and into Wilmington, shoot down through Delaware, Eastern Shore of MD and VA, over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel then down the coast on US 17. Much Much better ride.
