Anybody up for Tech session

I am getting very close to the 24K service. Anybody want to help me with it? We could do a tech session as well. I have a two bay garage. I also need to install the fuse block under the seat. Any takers?

I wouldn't mind seeing an LT in pieces all over the floor. If the timing is right I'll stop by to lend a hand, perhaps pick up some of the finer points of bike mechanicals and such...

Might be a good excuse to take nice ride as I am little north of the rest of you, but wouldn't mind helping out if the timing is right. I'll be doing my 18K service in about a 1000 miles.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Ok Looks like we have some takers. How does a Sunday in August sound? The next thing is what do we need to do a 24K service?

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

A sunday in august works for me!
How deep do you want to go?.... I have a service manual i think it covers 05s

The 24k Maintenance schedule covers:
Engine oil
Gear oil (I have the 13mm hex)
Fuel filter (do you have the QD?)
Air Filter (if you’re doing the fuel filter might as well) Get a K&N
Spark plugs (Bosch # XR7LDC or NGK # DCPR7E )
Clutch Fluid (should be changed every 24k or 2 years) This will be fun
Brake Fluid (should be changed annually) if you go this deep you might want to get the speed bleeders
Check swinging arm bearings (hmm…. This could be interesting)
Check throttle cable play (the service manual will come in handy)
Replace the coolant at least every 2 years? (Another fun one)
Check the steering damper (the service manual will come in handy here as well)
Check valve clearances, adjust if necessary (OH REAL FUN) bucket time

Do you want to do any thing like the weep hole or Canisterectomy?

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

I would love to see/help with the brake and clutch fluid change, was thinking of doing mine over the winter.

If I can make it down there, I would like to do the Canisterectomy to my bike. Once again, depends on timing, but a Sunday sound good.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Count me in to help out depending on my work schedule.
I need to put on a new front tire as well, so we could make that a tech session item if there's any interest.
8/10 is the one Sunday so far I can't make it.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

I'd love to witness this also. Just got back from a trip to Nova Scotia and PEI rounding the 17k mark on the odometer so I will be needing the 18k service soon.
When you decide on a date I'll see if I can fit it in.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

I'd like to mount a new front tire, but it's not that big a deal really - if you'd rather ride Gerard, don't sweat it.
If we are going to change the tire, do I need to get anything for it? Wheel weights, etc.?

No big deal I'll bring it. Jim already has the bolts mounted in his floor! You will need weights as I am fresh out of them.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Funny, but if it rains like hell I'll be there. I'm stuck on a HoneyDo patio build. Unlike when I was looking for a bike, I did like no research on this crap thus its a learning experience. I didn't believe a neighbor when he said eight grand for a 300 sq/ft patio. I figured that I would do it for under 2 grand.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Can't attend your Tech session, but being a do-it yourselfer I have always wanted to do my own tires. I have looked at the No Mar setup it looks good but it is costly. I wanted to know what system or combinations you are using to protect your wheels and also get the job done. Sorry about side tracking your thread, but your experience and advice would be a big help.

Thanks Rick

We may have a major repair at the tech session. A friend of a friend hit a pot hole with his R1100 and did some tranny damage. Anybody up for this type of work? I am not sure what happened so I am trying to get more info.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

OK. The tire changer came in yesterday, it was missing the Bead Break shoe. Gerard I sent an email yesterday seeing if you could just bring the bead breaker. Can you do that? Here is the list of things I would like to do:
Oil
Gear
Tranny oil
Fuel Filter maybe, have the fuel filter but not sure if I want to go there.
Plugs
Check throttle play
Coolant was done last year so we are good there.
Check valves.
Install fuse block.

So I will see all of you on Sunday. I have two bays but only one lift. So we can do two bikes at once.

I was also thinking about taking a ride after if we were up to it. We can talk more on Sunday.

For all coming from the Middletown area the distance from the time you get on Rt 16 is only 5 miles. I have been telling most people 8miles. IT Is only 5 miles to Waterhole. from the time you get on Rt 16 from 66.

It's not likely, but on the off chance I can get away early enough on Sunday I'll call Gerard to see if you need any supplies like paper cups, mustard, 20W50...

Figures, the one day we can get someone with the equipment to pull the bushes from in front of the house to ready it for the stonework is.... Sunday. :-(

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Actually I hired a landscape company to excavate which was done Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon I enlisted a friend to assist on Friday through Sunday as needed, minus noon Saturday on due to him and his wife having a planned get together with us and several others. So Saturday was expected to be limited to perhaps 4 hours of work and a dozen hours of food, BS and beer. Good times!

Thursday I arranged for 6 yards of processed stone to be delivered Friday (this) morning and had my son pick up a plate compactor and laser level this afternoon. Damn if everything didn't go off without a hitch.

We started around 6 tonight. So Alice (hence the Ali in AliMar) got home from work around 7 and I sent her off for quick but good Bertucci pizzas. By 8 we had roughly 4 yards moved (2/3 of what was delivered anyway - perhaps not 4 yards; that's yet to be determined). We ate the pizza, sucked down several beers and at least a litre of Vinho, then back to work. By shortly after 9 we had moved all of the stone minus a few small piles left in the yard. Far better than I had expected. Tomorrow we start before 8. I figure by 10 I have the processed stone leveled and I'm running the compactor around the block, measuring, preparing for MORE stone no doubt. Just don't know how much, but certainly know it will not be by SUNDAY.

Long story (sorry) but I'm feeling (sorely) good that things are happening faster than I expected. Perhaps SUNDAY will be wide open. Providing I have free motion of my limbs come Sunday morning it's looking at least like I have more than half a chance at making it there. I would much rather be sniffing the fumes from a gas tank while changing a fuel filter than PUSHING STONE!

Maybe...

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

That Silver LT without the front wheel reminds me of those cycle like things the bad guys were riding in one of the star wars movies! I trust all went well, the front tire reaffixed and no lasting damage and all.

Sorry I couldn't have been there. I was far too tired, sore and simply couldn't drag my butt into the garage, let alone toss a leg over...

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Well Guys thanks for all the help. I really mean that. So in the next couple of weeks we will need to Tech Session Part Deux so we can finish the tappet replacement. There were a couple of pretty worn tappets so I need to go get them and then put the bike back to together. So i will be bikeless for the next couple of weeks. Unless we can plan something some night after work.

HEy Bill S,

You out there anywhere? Wanna help put the beast back together? I hear you are pretty good at the process.

I will let you all know when i get the parts. I will post the spreadsheet for assistance on that as well. I am too wiped to pull out the laptop and email it tonight.

Again thanks for the help, I certainly could not do it myself.

Re: Anybody up for Tech session

Once again, a HUUUUGE THANK YOU to everyone, Gerard and Jim especially for both hosting and mentoring!
Gerard, I simply cannot thank you enough for all of your help - I really appreciate it man.

Scared myself silly with the new tires not 100 feet out of Jim's driveway! Wanted to swerve back and forth a little to scrub the new tires in and almost turned right out into the freakin woods man! Apparently the old tires were a little more worn than I thought - New tires ROCK!
Bike ran right all the way home, AND I got to listen to the IPod man! How sweet is that!

Thanks again and it was really great to meet the "newbies"!
