STC in April

I know it's a bit early, but anyone planning on attending the STC at the Ironhorse Ranch in April? I think I'm going to make a reservation and was just wondering about anyone else from the NE.

I went two years ago and had a great time. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just about bursting with new growth color. The only thing better than the ride is the fragrance- with everything blooming, the smell in the air was just incredible.

I've penciled it on my calendar. Maybe we can hook up somewhere and ride down together.

Thumbs up this is looking good

So far it appears upwards of 9-10 if I count correctly The dates are locked in as mentioned in the previous post.
Last year I left early in the morning and rode out through Harrisburg, then down 81 rather than deal with I95 and DC traffic. 700 miles, about 12hrs in the saddle.
I was thinking this year to cut up the ride and take a slower roll down the parkways instead of the big roads. I am curious as to the mind set of those that are considering this. Coming from the CT, NY area you will be adding a couple more hours? Would you guys think of doing this in one shot or break it up into 2 days?

I might be interested in attending this year. It will depend on the kid's schedules that week. Hopefully all those days will be open for me.

I'll need a new seat prior to that trip.

The first time down I went down in one day and ended up rolling into Iron Horse after midnight in the rain. I did not like riding the back roads of W NC/TN in the dark and in the rain and don't want to do that again. For the fall roundup I went down in 2 days (stopping in W VA) and shooting back home in one day (More familiar with CT after dark)

I have run down to Georgia twice this riding season. In early June and late September. In June I timed my run to run the BRP from Waynesboro to Asheville. It's an relatively easy day to Waynesboro Va and a full day to Asheville NC via the parkway. From my home to Waynesboro is about 400 miles. If I leave just after morning traffic I can be in the Waynesboro/Harrisonburg area late afternoon. I have done the parkway many times both directions over the years and I do not miss the opportunity to ride it or ride it for the time permitting me.

IMHO you need to have multiple riding plans and lots of alternates because of weather. The parkway can be cold and socked in with fog and that makes it relatively dangerous and very slow. I run the parkway at the speed limit and I find it probably the best riding in the east. This year is the only time I can remember that I was able to run the entire length from Waynesboro to Cherokee without any weather related issues. In fact it was the best ride ever for me. I ran multiple times for 30 to 40 miles and never met another M/V that was actually traveling or moving in my direction. There was a few the opposite direction but not many.

Hopefully I will have all my yearly service done before the April STC session along with new shocks I hope to install. If the group buy comes through for me.. If I'm ready I will be going down also. Sounds like a good trip.

You make a very good point regarding the weather conditions, April can be iffy... I have never run the Parkway the whole way, it sounds like you nailed it with timing and conditions!! I have been able to do bits and pieces, making up time on the big roads. You have a few months to get the service and parts done

Ditto!- I took the Blue Ridge Parkway down over two days and slabbed it back in one. If it wasn't for the damned traffic on the Belt Parkway, I would have been home and cozy by 10:30 pm. I got stuck in traffic on the NJ Turnpike all the way to the Nassau/Suffolk line. I made it home by something like 2 AM.

If I remember right, I took 95 to 66 to 81 and stopped at a nice Days Inn in Staunton,VA. I thought I was closer than I was and probably could have traveled for another two hours. I ended up rolling into the Ironhorse like Fred just as it started to get dark.

Id be interested in going

Never attended a Spring Training Camp but have been riding for years. Just got a 2001 LT and love it. Would be interested in meeting the group for the ride down. Have it marked (Apr 17-19) on my calendar. Ride down for one day or two - either is fine with me, but probably two days makes more sense. Sharing rooms?

Ok, looks like we have a NE posse forming for this trip. I have a Garmin GPS proposed route down from CT figured out. Will leave 0-dark-30 from NE CT and stop in Colchester to pick up Jim then ride a mixture of highway and secondary roads down to Lexington, VA to sleep for the night. I plan to cross the Hudson at Bear Mt. (does that work for you Ray?) We will pass through York, PA, so I thought we might stop at the Harley plant for a look. This will be about 600 miles for me, but less for everyone else.

Day 2 will be about 100 miles south on I-81/64 and then most of the day on the BRP.
