Moa

Is there anyone heading out to West Bend and want company. I am thinking of slabbing it across I80 on the way out and coming back through Canada.

vBMWr meeting at beer garden

Fred,

Are you going to be at the vBMWr meeting of vets at the beer garden? Some are doing a shift from 4-8, I think friday evening. Think we will leave on the 9th, but still not sure on which way. Maybe depend on the weather.

I'm meeting up with a few members of the Long Island BMW Riders Club in the morning to work out a route. I know of at least three others going from the group.

Jim, I'll be sure to stop by your campsite and say hi to you and your wife.

Jim, i will try to make the vBMWr thing in the beer tent but no guarantee.

Rob, let me know what your group decides and maybe we can get together if our scheds work.

i am going to be staying in the sherpa area this trip, dont have to carry any gear that way.

Will be heading out from Fort Lee NJ Just across the GWB. mid morning might work.
Did you know that you can ship your tent, sleeping bag,ect to the rally site, use it
for 3 or 4 days and than ship it back home from rally .It cost me approx $40.00 each
way,but i ship the works air mattress, coffee pot + a tent to cover the ground tent and
provide some shade.Usually not lucky enough to find tree tenting area.

boxer259, That sounds like something I could do some other time but for $20 more my tent, sleeping bag and chair will be set up and waiting for me and I can just leave it when I decide to go home.
I was just looking at a map and we could meet at the Garden State/I80 interchange on Wed morning and head west from there. I am not familiar with that exit but I am sure I can find it or maybe there is a more convenient place that you are aware of.

Hi Fred,

It looks like Jacque and I will be leaving Long Island early on Tuesday ~ 5 AM (YEESH!).

Here is the route we're plannning:

We're going to take I 80 to 380 to Route 6 in PA. I heard the Rt. 6 is a great ride, slow but great. I'm open to any ideas.

Wanna join up? Anyone else?

Rt6 in western PA is, indeed, an enjoyable ride. I would put on the extra miles to avoid Chicago. Unless you go through at 3 AM, the traffic is brutal and the drivers constantly weave between all lanes without signaling.

We're going to head north as soon as we approach South Bend. I hope it is far enough east to avoid Chi-town traffic.

Rob; Thanks for the invite but I need to stick with my Wed departure and not at 3am. I lived just outside Chicago for 10 years so maybe I am used to it, and the last time I went up I94 on the bike it was not too bad just a lot of small tolls.

Fred, since you know Chicago, is I294, the toll road going by O'Hare, a decent choice to by-pass down town? I looks like fewer on/off ramps. Barnett

Barnett; You are correct, I forgot about I294 that would be a much better choice and I believe pretty much toll free.

Boxer259; That works for me just give me an approx time. I believe it takes me about 1.5-2hrs to get to that area. My cell is 860 543-9676 but if I am moving I probably will never hear it.

Canada would be a better bypass!

Seriously, I would drop further South to bypass the city, and don't forget about Midway Airport (and traffic) as well... Once you are out to the O'Hare area, and it is not rush hour, you should be OK. I think EZ-pass will work in Illinois.

When are you guys planning on leaving the Rally? I just made my ferry reservation and the boat's booked solid on Sunday unless you make the 6 am ferry or the 7:45 ferry.

It looks like I may have to ride around Chi Town to get home? If you're planning on leaving Sunday at a decent time (8am), can I tag along?

Gerard; My thoughts are to stay on 80/90 until i intersect 294 and head north. It has been 20 yrs since I lived out there but that was the way I used to go home to Glendale Heights.

Rob; Boxer259 and I have not talked about the return trip but I am thinking I would like to come home through Canada as I have not ridden that way before, and sure you are welcome to tag along with me if you like.

There is a slim chance I'll be at the BMW MOA rally next week. Departure day and time is completely up in the air at this time, so it will probably be a solo trip (with my wife; no other bikes is what I mean).

If I can make it, I hope to see you all there. You meet the most interesting people at the national rally.

Howard,
I'm leaving this Saturday with 2-3 others for a ride through MI and then the UP. This will be a Gypsy Ride taking in all of the sights and staying at State Parks and KOA's. Looking forward to the Sand Dunes, Maritime Museums, lighthouses, Mackinac Bridge, Soo locks and all of the other tourist locations and good eats along the way on the way.
This some great info on the MOA Forum with respect to rides from each direction. Should be arriving Wednesday afternoon.

I'll be working Registration for MOA on Friday from 4-8 PM. Come on by @ 8 and we'll go to the Beer Garden for a brew!

How's this route from West Bend through Canada to NY. I takes us through the 'Dacks which should be great riding.

Anyone know anything about Canada's TC 17?

Rob; That was pretty much the route I was thinking bout although I had not narrowed it down to roads/highways as yet. For me I will have to motel it on the way as I am not taking any camping gear with me. I am using Mayberry Sherpa facilities at West Bend and traveling pretty light.
For me that sounds like a plan and if you are still inclined we can meet and discuss it at the rally.

That works for me too! I'm bringing camping gear with me but plan on using motels on the way up and back. I'll PM you my cell phone number.

FWIW, the last day of riding home puts us into Albany at 8pm. I'm going to keep riding home. I figure on pulling into my driveway around 12-1am. It's better than riding in rush hour traffic. Besides, I have to be at work on Tuesday.

You're doing it the right way, Paul. IF I can go it will be a dash up, stay one (ONE!) day, then dash home; our son and his fiancee are in an event that we want to see back here at home.

If we do go we'll be traveling home on Friday, so no-go on the invitation. I'll take a rain check, please.

I haven't seen Rukka gear in person but they look like they are of the highest quality, and they cost a ton -- more than Aerostich gear.

Howard,
Rain Check acknowledged!
I got to get down to the Capitol city for a visit and ride the southern roads. Both my kids went to OU and I could visit the campus again on a bike from the west or east!

Ride safe my friend!

Boxer259; I am planning on leaving home/CT at 7am and hopefully be at the intersection between 0830 and 0900. If I am early I will drag my feet a little to keep to that schedule. Is there something else I can call you other than "Boxer259" didn't see a name in your profile?

Crap! Life Interferes with a Great Ride Yet Again!

I have some bad news- unfortunately, after making my son's first college tuition payment of the new year, I had to hit my vacation fund to supplement my savings. That means, I won't be able to make the Rally after all.

If you click on the links below you will find a PDF of the turn by turn directions for the route through Canada and into NY. I've also attached the route that I was going from Long Island. My original goal was to visit the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. But, I wouldn't get there until after 5 and museum closes at 5:30. So, I eliminated that part of the run. My thinking was that 5 pm in any city is rush hour. That won't be fun.

I am sorry. If things change between now and Monday, I'll let you know.
