Looking for logging near Albany NY May 17, 2007

The SO and are going to the Down East Rally in Maine on May 18-20. We are leaving a day early to break the trip up. We are looking for good inexpensive place to stay near Albany NY for the evening for May 17. If anyone can suggest a place that would be great.

Thanks

Garry & Esther

There is an oxymoron.. Good and inexpensive..

What do you consider inexpensive. Under $100 or under $75 or under $50. There are some of the inexpensive chains in Albany.. near the airport on Wolf road.

Your definition of good will make a big difference here. If I'm looking for a clean place to just get some sleep with no frills the Microtel or the Days Inn work for me. You can usually get a room for $55-$60 per night.

Just google them. They both have motels in the Albany area.

Good Luck,
Kevin

If it's just lodging and no attractions you're looking for, I'd look here;
Quality Inn & Suites Airport (NY024)
611 Troy-Schenectady Rd. , Latham, NY, US, 12110-2505
Phone: (518) 785-5891 Fax: (518) 785-5805

I'd definitely steer clear of the Econo Lodges in the Albany area. Stayed at the one in Albany and never again. . . filthy! Seems like anything less than 3 stars in Albany is a real s--thole. Schenectady and points north on I-87 might be better choices if Albany is too crowded. Saratoga has some nice hotels and is a nice stop, an interesting city/village. Plenty of interesting places there. This is a pretty nice hotel in Saratoga Spgs., about $90-100/nt. usually.
Best Western Park Inn
3291 S Broadway
Saratoga Springs, New York 12866-6203 United States

Oh alright. . .I'll ride next to the Harley this time!

Since we are going to leave late on Thursday (around 4:00pm), I don't know how far we will get. I see Schenectady on the map and definatley stay out of Albany.

Hey Bill, looks like we were both born on National Holidays..... just different years......

Thanks

Garry

IMHO I would not go to Schenectady if you were coming south on I-87 and were headed east towards Maine. There are motel and hotels there but there are much better choices on Wolf Road.. Red Roof Inn, for example. Wolf road is the last exit on I-87 where it touches I-90 off the Northway on the western side of Albany. Lots of resturants some 24 hours..

Depending on if you can get discounts a good place to stay would be a Fairfield Inn in East Greenbush about $95 normally with breakfast till about 9am. I-90 exit 9 (US 4). There is a 24 hour Denny's and a Cracker Barrel restaurant on the property if you arrive late or leave early.

I stay there occasionally as I work in the area sometimes. Rooms are clean and relatively quiet. There is 4 other hotel/motels on that exit and it is not a city.

Looking for logging?

geez, I got all excited, ready to gas up my chainsaws and hitch up my WoodMizer band saw mill and head on out to help with the logging.

Downeast rally, huh? Should be a good year.
We have gotten frozen and drenched on a few occasions "down" there.
But the 'lobsta" is always good.

Two hours east of Albany in Brattleboro, VT
http://www.dalemschalet.com/
would be different from the motels you'll find along the way in Albany and Troy. But it may not be on your route.

There's a couple of places in Bennington, VT which is closer to Albany and Troy.

Have a good trip.

I'll be coming across I-90 from Buffalo. GPS says it is the fastest way there from my home (north west of Toronto). 1150 Km total. Albany is about 1/2 way there we will not have too bad a ride on Friday.
Thanks for the info.

Well, that is not too bad.. I stay in Schenectady everyonce in a while and most of the easy access stuff isn't pretty and most are expensive in and around Albany. I stay up there on the company credit card so I usually don't try to stay in places that I would normally if I were paying the bill. If you have AAA or AARP or same type of Canadian membership you probably will do better staying at a moderate priced hotel in the US that is also in Canada that honors that discount or find a Motel 6 or similar place and ask for a senior discount. Unless your a young guy.. and can't pass for someone like me..

If you want to spend more miles but probably not much more time you might consider dropping down to the bottom of NY and coming across the Southern Tier Expressway and running down to I-84 to swing you back up towards Boston or swinging back up to I-90 on I-88 from Endicott/Binghamton. Much better ride than droning along on I-90 for 500 miles. I have done both numerous times, in my truck in the winter and on the LT during the rest of the time and I opt for the lower route whenever possible.
