Re: LED for PIAA1100X

PIAA isn't offering a way to retrofit the halogen 1100s with LEDs. They're offering a new version of the 1100 with LEDs. I haven't run across any information suggesting the LEDs of their new system offer the same connectivity as the halogen housings I've got.

The Denali lights on my RT are not replaceable. With a 50,000 hour life, it's no concern. Don't know if the same is true of PIAA LEDs.

If PIAA are supplying replacement globes for the LED 1100's why wouldn't they be the place to start or did I miss something?

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

The Denali lights on my RT are rated at 493 lumens and that's more than enough.

The Sylvania bulbs I bought last night at a local hardware store say on the box that they're rated at 350 lumens but on the base of the bulb its says 525 lumens. Not sure what that means but am going to try it anyway.

LED life is degraded by heat. These Sylvania's would seem to work well in this application because the design of the heat sinks should allow air to flow around the bulb while the bike is moving.

For future reference: Sylvania model number LED6MR16/DIM/830/NFL25. The box says the bulbs are for indoor use but also states "suitable for damp locations - not for use where directly exposed to water."

I won't be able to test until next weekend but will report back.

Looks promising indeed. The wide angle may be a problem for some applications, but not in your case.

Let us know how it comes out, please.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

I have a number of MR16 LEDs that I purchased to install in my MotoLights. Like you, I use them for daylight conspicuity and not for night illumination.

Email me at my site name at aol dotcom with your address and I will send you a pair. If they work for you, send me a check for $18, if not, send them back. I have 2 or 3 extra, unused pairs.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

Found this site: http://www.hero-ledstore.com/mr16-50...8b4bjcc3g05gs6

The first bulb listed states that it's the same size as the standard MR16. I'll contact them and see if any of their other offerings are also standard size.

In fitting the halogens to the PIAA I cut off the front cover of the PIAA bulb as suggested elsewhere on this ste. I'll do the same with the LED.

Even though the halogens were designated for indoor use only, they've performed very well, even outlasting a PIAA bulb in some cases.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

The PAR designation I gave was just a generic, not intended to suggest that it would fit.

MR16 lamps are often used in applications where there is no front lens on the fixture, so front clearance is not always a concern. Unfortunately, bikes generally have a separate front lens for sealing purposes, if nothing else.

Some LED lamp distributors, such as www.theledlight.com, give dimensions. Check thir website and see if they will fit.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

Is the designation on the bulb somewhere? I know that a standard MR-16 halogen bulb fits the PIAA 1100x housing because I've used them. But I've seen on line that many MR-16 LEDs don't have the exact same physical dimensiins and so don't fit some household fixtures. They may or may not fit the PIAA.

I have a standard hologen bulb marked EXN/CG and USA 6. Those don't look like the designation you cited.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

Do you know what lamps are used in the 1100? If the standard lamp designation is known (PAR 37 or similar), you may be able to find an LED equivalent.

Re: LED for PIAA1100X

I currently have the same PIAA 1100x lights on my LT but desire to have the new LED version. I have read somewhere that the LED bulb fits perfectly in the original 1100x housings and uses the same wiring. The problem I have faced so far is finding the LED bulbs. Not interested in dropping $300+ dollars for a new set LED 1100x's.

LED for PIAA1100X

My chief reason for using the PIAA 1100X lights is for daytime visibility as opposed to night time illumination. Very little of my riding is done at night and the HID headlight does a great job. Even with a halogen bulb used in place of the PIAA branded light, I've got light for my purposes.

I installed a pair of Denali LEDs on my RT and really like them for both day and night. I'm thinking that LEDs on the LT would be nice too.

Any recommendations on a sealed light that gives decent longevity?
