The rear rotor is supposed to have a little movement from side to side. I think they call it "floating", and it will have that kind of movement with or without the "cowbell" sounds which I theorize must come from vertical slop between the rivets and the disc. All I really know is that after a trip to the BMW shop to get a redesigned rotor mounted, the "cowbell" is silenced but the "float" is still there.

I've had the front brake "rattle" due to the missing clip, and that's easily traced if it disappears with the front brake lightly applied. I've had the rear brake "rattle" due to the worn rivets and that sounds similar. About the only "clunk" I've heard is when the front wheel bottoms out on a pot hole, etc., and that sounds similar to your explanation. I think that was the front shock so that might be a good place to start.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

Try your front rotors as well. Mine rattles something awful and I know its the rotor. I've got some kind of issue I need to get taken care of.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

ditto on the front fender. Mine broke and was rattling. Couldn't figure out what it was till I was cleaning her one day and noticed. Check it out.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

before I replaced the springs when I hit a recessed manhole (about 1 inch) at 60 kph I got a klunk/bang out of the front end

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

If the noise is coming from underneath, It amy be the infamous "cowbell". This is from the rivets wearing on the rear brake rotor. This noise is only that. It doesn't affect the braking or safety. I got tired and installed a EBC rotor. Easy fix. Reach under the bike and see if there is any play in the rotor. Thant may be your problem.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

I used to get klunks in the front end until I went with Ohlins shocks. It is even better now since I asked for lighter damping during the last rebuild of the Ohlins.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

My clunk when I hit a bump was the igniter for the HID headlight. Zip tied it down and no more clunk!

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

Yea took me a little time to get used to the vibrating tupperware too, but I've gotten acustomed to it. I think "rattle" may have been a poor description. I'm talking about a "clunk" that I feel in the handle bars and subsequently the entire bike.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

A second vote for the brake pads. Find a spot in the road that will make it rattle and then ride over it with the front brake lightly applied. No rattle means the issue is with the brake pads. If it still rattles look elsewhere.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

If it is coming from the front...it is most likely the front fender. I am not sure what year model you have, but this happens in the pre 2005 models. The fender cracks along the seam where it goes from black to the color of your bike.

Here is a post I made about a repair to the inside of my fender a long time ago.

http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35399

This worked for a while but it cracked again through the patch. On my next repair I used PC7 epoxy and tin punch metal cut to shape. That has held up extremely well.

Hope that helps,

Ron

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

Check your mirrors to make sure that one of the three pins did not get unseated

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

I would guess that there probably are not too many LT's that don't have strange noises. I would further guess that the noises are in the tupperware. They may originate from something else like tire cupping, engine idle or who knows what - but are then radiated to the tupperware. I used to worry every little noise - perfectionist that I am, but have have mostly gotten over it.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

My 99LT had a rattle that came from aftermarket front brake pads that did not have the little oval spring around the hanger pins, on chatter bumpy roads and it would stop when front brake lever was touched.

Re: Rattle When I hit bumps?

My bike did that...til I ziptied down the cables installed by the previous owner to power his gps and radar detector.

I've noticed that 9 time out of ten, if I have a vehicle making noise, it's usually my fault...change in the change drawer, ice scraper in the side pocket...

Rattle When I hit bumps?

Recently I've been noticing when I hit bumps in the road, it feels like something is rattling in the front end. If it were any other bike I would claim that it was a stem bearing that was loose. I'm not sure that is the case here... Up on the center stand, everything seems in order (no wiggling in the rear tire etc...) and I can't get the rattle to re-occur at stand still when I apply the brakes and rock the bike back and forth. Anyone have thoughts?
