Truer words were never spoken! While on 2 wheels you still have control to avoid the crash. Once you're down, you have crashed you're no longer in control and at the mercy of physics and the other hazards in your vicinity.

SEE (Scan Evaluate Execute). Prevent the situation to start with. M wife has asked me "why did you slow down back there?" The answer is always, "So I could counteract the danger inherent in the situation should it happen." Nothing is 100%, but so far it's served me well.

Re: Speedtv: How to lay down your bike?

Years ago I had an old Porsche 911. One morning on the way to work I got into a furball on the freeway and had to swerve a couple of times. In so doing I got that massive rear end polar moment going back and forth and the next thing I know I'm being slung around for 720 degrees worth of spin...with those wide P7's sliding sideways and screaming like a horde of banshees from Hell.

Somehow, through total good luck and I promise you nothing that I did to help, I came out of it pointing in the right direction and continued on unscathed. Once the adrenaline shakes wore off (and I got some dry pants on), I just coolly told everyone that some idiot cut in front of me and that I "had to spin her around" to avoid a crash.

Yep far better to concentrate on a swerve or braking hard, depending on the situation.

I've talked to a bunch of folks that have "had to lay it down" over the years. Here's the thing, none of them had a moving object thrown into their path. If you have time to lay it down, you likely had time to brake, swerve or both...just my 2 cents...

Yes, practice the AVOID. We prefer not to crash.

Stunt men need to practice laying down a bike. All the rest of us need to practice not doing it.

I'm a Rider Coach and yes, we teach the swerve, it seems to bit quite a bit more effective.
