that hd would never have sold for that with 78k miles on it, heck it would just not sell near 14k , my '01 Glide sold in aug '02 for 12,5 with 37k and about 3k in extra's plus all serivces just done new tires brakes everything was perfect,

I have not seen any high mileage hd sell for near what you state there, and I have worked around them for years

believe me high mileage hd's do not hold value.

rattso Although I did not read the article being talked about but I would presume most of the resale estimates come from the Kelly Blue book or a likley source. The fact is as mentioned above, a stock high milage Harley is is about as easy to sell as a three legged pig (or HOG). Their are tons of used Harleys for sale and the high milage ones that sell usually have many thousands of dollars thrown into them. Engine work to increase size, cams, stroker kits, exhausts, fat wheels and tires, sis speed trannies, Corbin or custom seats and more chrome and goodies that the Farkle addicted LT'er could possibley imagine.

I must agree with this. High mileage HDs are few and far between. The newspaper I look at everyday always has 5 to 1 ... Harleys for sale over all other brands combined. If i was looking for a Harley... i'd scratch at least 25 percent off all the asking prices.

Texas42 I'm kinda glad, that way I can buy a 2 or 3 year old BMW at half the orginal price with only 8K miles and ride it without worring that I might scratch it or it might get dirty. I don't think that buying a motorcycle that you ride is an investment. Most BMW's are ridden hard and long, much more so than Goldwings or Harleys; just my 2 cents.

Does it say how many more miles are on the LT than either of the two others bikes? I would wager a bet that the LT is used more than the other two for any model year compared.

For the LT, first oil change at 600 miles, then every 6,000 miles afterwards.

RideIt Hey, let's face it if someone is buying a certain brand of MC because of operating costs and resale, they should buy a VW rabbit and forget about a Motorcycle. I've owned GW, Harleys and BMWs. I will continue to ride BMW even if they would cost more because that's what I like. As far as the resale value of Harleys, (1) Most have very very low miles (2) All of them look the same since the 60s.

If you're calculating, the H-D oil change interval is 2,500 miles.

KBandit i am really surprised to learn that the cost of ownership of the LT is the same as the wing. never would have guessed it. the wings i've owned over the years have all been absolutely trouble free, plus much easier to access consumables like spark plugs, air filters, valve rockers, carbs/injectors, etc.

i had just assumed that the higher maintenance-intensiveness was the price i'd have to pay for superior handling.

BecketMa MCN uses List price for purchase price. Last time I looked at HD, they were way over list price.

When I bought my 00LT, it cost the same to insure as my 86HD. Course, after the first year, it costs less than the 86HD.

usmctpdog Since I have owned all three models several times over I have to interject something here.
The HD wil pull more $$ resale - *but it has to have very very low mileage on it!
I think the Goldwing suffers the least when it comes to mileage on it for selling purposes. My Best Friend riding buddy could not find a buyer for his 2 year old Harley Ultra dresser in mint condition with 2 years of factory warranty remaining because it had 78,000 miles on it! Not even for $10,000!
He paid $31,000 for it and after giving up private advertizing he took it around to all the dealers in Northern California. After one year of trying to sell it, His own dealer which he has bought many bikes from & did all the servicing on this bike, and he purchased a CVO 04 Screaming Eagle 103 in Limited edition for $$39,000 to replace this particular bike wrote him a check for $9,000.00 to buy it.

That's shameful. Even the service mnager told me to stay away from high mileage HD's as a money pit. End of story.

I plan on keeping my 05 LT a long time, that is why I purchased the newest model I could find, used with the lowest mileage for a much less than brand new dealer price. It's long term engine longevity and high technology is what attracted me and while no motorcycle is perfect, I did not want to deal with the problems of the GL that I have owned and know quite well about. Not that the LT is perfect, but it is about managing your risk and I think the LT has the best potential long term for the least amount problems of the 3.

I have come full circle back to BMW since my 1973 R/75 !!

New Comparrison in MCN

I don't know how many get Motorcycle Consumer News, but I just received mine yesterday and found an interesting article comparing the overall five (5) year - 75,000 ownership costs of the K1200LT v GL1800 v Some big Harley.

I wasn't surprised to see that the cheapest bike to maintain over the entire period of time was the LT. I was surprised to read that all savings are lost when you look at what each of the three bikes are worth at 5 years/ 75,000 miles. The LT is worth less than the Wing and Harley.

I can understand the LT being worth less in the American market than the Harley because the Harley is supposedly an icon / fad / legend in its own time, etc. But shouldn't the LT be worth more than the Wing?
