Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

I was passing a "formation" of HD's one fine sunny day and had to squeeze in with them as a car came from the other direction, as soon as the car passed I finished passing the rest of them, but I got several one finger salutes along the way. I dont really care.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Has anybody read "No Angel" by Jay Dobyns?
I'm about 2/3 through it right now. And, if even half of it is true, I wouldn't mess with entering a "formation".

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Howdy kids, having posted a reply back in 2010, just thought I's stop by and throw out another comment or two.
1} Shooting left handed. Unless you are left handed normally, I would suggest using the cruise control and your right hand.
2} Motorcycle Gangs. I was trying to figure out exactly what you guys were talking about and then I remembered, those must be those things I pass on the interstate. For a long time I thought they were just carny workers riding their attractions to a new venue. Silly me.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

LOL, this has got to be one of the most comical threads I have seen on this forum. While tool bags are common in the branched out "MC's" (smaller groups with more to prove) I find that the HA, and DD are quite tame at 9am when they are coming up asking for coffee after a long night of partying. I will say that I have experienced the agressive attitude, although, I'd probably do the same thing. At a party last year, one of the DD guys raped a HA "Old lady" and within the hour about 30 Chicago HA's and about 10 "Nomads" appeared. It got really really tense up in there. Thankfully I only worked the RV gate and coffee table. Generally if you respect their space, the favor will be returned. Occassionally you'll get the newb that wants to get a reaction out of you.

He probably did a Google search for Thunder "farts" MC and this thread popped up,
his mentality being what it is, explains the vague threat,
because after all he's the "toughest biker behind a keyboard"

Chances are that will be his one and only post,

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Some of these groups don't like to be passed. They take it as a sign of disrespect. That's what my friend was pulled over for in Ft. Worth. The rider that pulled him over told him that was a good way to get shot. They feel like they own the road. It might have just been them trying to scare him but one never knows. I've never seen anything but Harleys in the groups. Most clubs require that you ride American iron. That's part of the Harley mystique that sells their bikes so you can be a pretender......................

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

These "groups" need to be watched closely when driving as well. I've nearly flattened a couple of these clowns when traveling with the family coming up on Savannah I 95. Didn't know that despite passing them in the left lane all they need to is point to where they want to go and then all of them go at once. No head check, turn signals and just pulled out in a group.

Also, riding/driving on the SE interstates is an excercise in patience as many southern drivers camp out in the left lane, cruse at the speed limit (or less) and will not pull to the right to let you through. Your only option is to pass on the right which at least when I learned how to drive was a no-no.

Be Safe.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

In the hopes of turning this string in a kinder, gentler direction I'd like to refer back to a ,few of the comments near the beginning. The phrase "Hawaiian Good Luck Sign" referring to the good old "giving the finger" or flipping the bird" was used. No one seemed to know where the euphemism originated.

In 1968 the Vietnam war was going hot and heavy. Other conflicts involving American troops around the globe were overshadowed by the horrific body counts reported nightly by the networks. A Naval Intelligence ship, The Pueblo, was boarded by North Korean troops off the coast of North Korea. All personnel were taken prisoner. They were beaten until false confessions were signed. As a gesture of "good will" North Korea got the Pueblo crew cleaned up, patched up and dressed up and took a picture to show how well they were being treated. In the photo released around the world, several of the crew were shown expressing their true feelings using the middle finger on their right hand. The North Korean captors had no idea what it meant. When asked, one of the Pueblo's crew explained that it was a Hawaiian good luck sign, known in the US as a symbol of approval. The picture ran all over the world.

When North Korea realized what had happened all of the crew were beaten unmercifully. When they were finally released crew members said it was worth it. Never underestimate the resourcefulness of the American military to engage the enemy against all odds.

Where does one learn or read about this "etiquette" so one doesn't unknowingly do something that your brothers don't like? I know not to jump into a funeral procession - they told us that in driver's ed. Nobody at the MSF mentioned anything about straying into your group ride.

Oh really. "Your brothers"? Did you only join here to make a stupid comment?

I'm not for interrupting anyones group ride, it doesn't matter if they're on Harleys or scooters. And I'm talking about interrupting, not safely passing them in another lane, which of course, I will do. It's a safety thing. Unless they are very active in a club and ride in a group on a regular basis, and have intelligent club leaders that care about safety and insist upon it, they may not know how to ride in a group safely and you may wind up looking like the person that caused a wreck just because you are the outsider.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Interesting thread, did't realize it was two years old.

It's a well known fact that people tend to lose their individuality in group settings. That stupid 60 second stunt could have easily landed the perpetrator in the ICU, and for what? Just to prove a point or fit in by acting like what the group expected?

The way I view this is anytime I'm surprised while riding I chalk it up as a FAIL. It's a reminder that I wasn't paying attention. I don't know if it's possible to maintain 100% situational awareness, but for me it's a reminder to refocus and be more aware.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Interesting enought that this was over two years ago and reflected my first 500+ mile away solo from home Orlando to ATL .

I have put over 50K miles in the sadle coast to coast and border to border since then and have yet to run into another "gang" on the road.

In retrospect I should have just downshifted, hauled a$$ and gotten out of range of them, yet the fact remains that they as a group were the ones in the wrong.

Attmpting to crash a MC rider should always be un acceptable.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is just an idiot.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Experienced BMW riders on longer runs are normally found at cruising speeds 5-10 mph faster than is comfortable on a Harley. When you've got the road miles, they'll never catch up to you, it will be the reverse. There is no chance of any Harley running down a decent rider on a BMW, especially if there are any twisties on the route..

In general I don't like popping into someone else's group so when I pass these guys I usually wick it up and blow by before they even realize I'm there. Haven't run into any objectors, yet but I don't crowd anyone, ever. Last time out I passed a cople of these groups with about a dozen bikes..

Maybe NC is different but when our local BMW club is out on a ride to eat and runs into a Harley bunch, folks wave and are generally well behaved...

All I can say is that, as mentioned previously, I give a "gang" of anything a wide berth. I don't care who they are. For bikes, I slow down and let them pass. For cars I just walk away when they start to bunch up. I really can't stand following or being followed so I just do the least intrusive action and go on my way. I'm not on the interstate to interact with anyone. Just a thought.

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Interesting post here. It went from suggestions to almost threats as to what brand a 1%'er should be riding and how one might just start blasting away at a "gang" of outlaw motorcyclists? Knowing that that group is willing at the drop of a hat to commit a felony assault that will garner prison time I might want to reassess my position and just how badly I want to try and prove I am right to them? Like poisonous snakes I have to look at a gang as something to leave alone at all times.

Funny thing is if I go to the Wing board they have a lot of riders who are totally convinced that anyone who rides anything but a wing is an inferior judge of motorcycles and dosn't merit being tampered with? Then I got to the Suzuki Vee Strom board (stromtroopers.com) and read the same advice. If you don't ride a dual sport bike that will go down a gravel road or up a mountain fire lane then you really aren't getting what motorcycling is all about? Then I can pop in on the VTX guys at VTXOA and find that the VTX is a far better bike and all who own it are equally exceptional individuals and Harley's are just so cliche. Now I wander into the Burgman site (BurgmanUSA) and am told that a Burgman scooter is more than sufficient and will do everything that any would be motorcyclist could possibly need, while spending less money and giving all one could ever want?

I may be missing the marks here but it would seem like any one who buys a bike can develope a serious case of me itis? I have been a member of this board for almost 10 years and I just have to stop and think, "What would Grif do?" Or what would Randy or Dave or any of the other long timers? I don't think it matters to much other than I don't shame myself or my choice of motorized travel? If it involves a "gang" of any kind then I need to do the boot scoot boogie and get away from that general area.

Ya'll have a nice day and don't play with rattlesnakes as they can bite.

I've never been bothered by any biker gangs and I admit I can be spotted as a cop from far away. Maybe they figured I was packing but I never had a problem. I do give them their space, not because I'm intimidated but because they can be dangerous to you while they are trying to ride close together. Some of them aren't the best riders to begin with and may have their senses dulled by drugs or booze, nor are they the sharpest tools in the shed even on a good day. Just give them their space next time.

Most Harley riders when alone or in a very small group, 3 or less, will come over and admire my chromehead or LT. Some actually give me a nod and say 'nice ride'. But as soon as a couple more of their friends walk over they act like I'm not even there. Not cool to be seen looking at the Beemers.

Paul, I am going to try this one more time. 1) By "Proxy" ? Where did you learn that logic? First, I didn't say I would ride with the Thunder Guard. I said I have and But in re reading my reply, I will admit I was not clear. I should have said; I have ridden and would again ride with many (not all) MC clubs because, from experience, they are that good in formation. Of course, as it was pointed out, SHI% happens and sometimes when one goes down, it get very ugly, very fast. Second, I certainly did NOT say they were right to try and harm you. Show me where I said that! I would never want to see a fellow rider go down, Patched or not....

I see from your sig line that you come from a long line of HD bikes.

Since you obviously can not read well, I will state again,

THEY WERE NOT IN A FORMATION.
THEY WERE NOT RIDING IN A ROW
THEY WERE JUST STRAGGLING ALONG

I can read just fine. I wasn't there. I didn't see how they were riding. I will concede that they were not riding in the formation you would expect of the old school MC's. They do in fact appear loosely organized in riding approach.

Where you said that they were right is where you wrote "What you did "wrong" was get into their formation. The formation exists for a reason"

Paul. Read your post. Your begged the question. "WTF did I do wrong?" I just tried to answer your question. How does answering your question translate into your conclusion that I thought they were right? Must be the same logic used above....

You will also see that you are in the minority here. in fact you are the 1% in this thread.

Ha ha ha. As if I care about "group" approval... Ha Ha Ha.....

I believe we all (maybe not you) (Huh???.. Is this a boating forum) are motorcycle enthusiasts here.

Riding is TOO dangerous to be riding like a prick. I care for my life, my family, my riding partners and my bike.

Even if an unexperienced rider entered a so called formation there is NO grounds for trying to wreck them or drive them into a truck.

You are absolutely right.

YOU missed the point!

You really think so? I think you were just looking for someone to pat you on the back and say...poor paul...what did those bad boys do to you??.. they should go to time out for scaring you ....boo hoo.

Nope. I've seen it myself, heading down I-5 in central California.

I was running 10-over as I passed two HA's sitting in the right lane doing the speed limit. One was on an LT and one on a Sportster. They decided to pass me back, so I let them. Then we hit some traffic, and I filtered back through up front and got back on my pace.

Last I saw them in my mirrors, they were turning off towards Hollister. I didn't bother to check if it was Sonny himself or not . . .

By defending them and by stating you would ride with them anytime, you took their side and by proxy said they and you were right by trying to harm another rider.

I see from your sig line that you come from a long line of HD bikes.

Since you obviously can not read well, I will state again,

THEY WERE NOT IN A FORMATION.
THEY WERE NOT RIDING IN A ROW
THEY WERE JUST STRAGGLING ALONG

Where you sad that they were right is where you wrote "What you did "wrong" was get into their formation. The formation exists for a reason"

THEY HAD NO FORMATION!!!!!

THEY WERE STRAGGLING ALONG!!!!

You will also see that you are in the minority here. in fact you are the 1% in this thread.

I believe we all (maybe not you) are motorcycle enthusiasts here. Riding is TOO dangerous to be riding like a prick. I care for my life, my family, my riding partners and my bike.

Even if an unexperienced rider entered a so called formation there is NO grounds for trying to wreck them or drive them into a truck.

YOU missed the point!

Re: Bullies!!! or just a-holes.. you tell me..

Frank, thanks for posting a very appropriate reference on this topic. When the 26 Brother Speed bikers went down the first thing that came to my mind was the 2 wide one behind another formation these groups tend to follow. 26 bikes going down in one incident? Ridiculous! The staggered formation would have saved 20 + of the bikes from going down. But, while safe, the staggered formation isn't cool and bad ass. This is one of the reasons I don't like to ride in groups.

On a lighter note have a look at the following. No riders were apparently hurt in the filming of this incident. Crotch rocket not so much.........

Pay special attention to the last 5 secs.
