this might be of some consolation as to the GVW and should you worry about it.
I read an article that discussed this problem. the answer to the overloaded bike problem was"go by the maximum load rating of the tires because most of the bikes out there would be overloaded if most riders figured their weight and that of the passenger including all of their apparell since most bikes maxGVW is not too high when taking in the weight of the bike, riders, and gear."
I don't remember what bike mag had this article but it was about the time I bought the LT. After checking the weights of all of the riders and gear this seemed to be the thing to do.

Motomadman Seems to handle it OK. Like all vehicles there is a built in safety margin that errors on the consevative side. I know when the load increases the beast can be hard to control at slow speeds. Need to haul more gear get a trailer to distribute the load and keep the center of gravity low....

GVW question

I know my 2003 LT has a GVW rating. I am wondering if anyone has had any issues about going over. I am not looking to pin anybody down. I am curious to know if there are any "People of substance" out there that travel with a SO and have the bike loaded up.

I have owned 3 BMW's. An 85 K100Rt, a 2000 R1100RT and now have a 2003LT. We have never had any issues, but as you gain age, you sometimes gain lbs as well... If you know what I mean.

I think my wife and I may be near the edge and maybe a bit over the edge when two up and fully packed. I wonder about it.
