C'mon John, lighten up. It is in the BIKE TALK section, so I figure its okay to post questions about any bike.

Back to subject, if I were looking at my first dual sport, I'd go on the cheap. Maybe even a 250 or 450, depending on the load and distance to ride off road.

I agree with Tony. Look for a good used GS or GSA. BMW's drop like a stone in price once they are driven off the show room floor, yet we are such an anal bunch that most used bikes remain in virtually mint condition. This allows you to get a very well cared for bike at a very reasonable price.

How about a used 1150GSA. I have been told by many it's actually a better bike than the 1200GSA, less expensive and it is heaverier too. With an 8 gal tank you can ride longer. Check it out.

I ride with a friend who has a KLR. Nice bike. Good compromise of roadability and off road capability IMO.

I can say for certain that sand is bad for chains and sprockets. Will require more maintenance and upkeep, but hey, that's teh price you pay for the fun of dual sports. As for the tire issue, I would guess that the OEM tires are a compromise, but I'm sure someone out there may know of a better tire for conditions.

The very term "dual sport" means compromise to me. You may have to compromise on your destinations somewhat, if the off-road part of your riding is too extreme. At that point, it might be better to have a dedicated off-roader. Many years ago, we used to take my uncle's dual sport Honda to the beach in NC and not think twice about it. Sand or asphalt. It was all good.

I feel pretty certain that you could find a bike that would work for you.

More newbie questions

Am I kidding myself with the idea of a dual sport bike? I went and visited some bike dealerships this weekend. A few people told me that a dual sport isn't really a dual sport. It's more of a compromise between the road and dirt.

When I think dual sport, I think drive down the road comfortably and go off roading decently. Off roading meaning mud, dirt, sand, streams, etc. But from what the guys told me, is that a dual sport really wouldn't be able to handle all that to well. Since your on more of a road tire and it couldn't handle our sugar sand here at all (it would just dig a hole). Also the sand is supposedly bad for the chain and sprocket.

Someone please set me straight.
