I'm with Ross. Triumph makes some fun bikes. I cannot even remember seeing one in the greater Los Angeles area--ever. Very rare.

Warden, nice bike. I sat on a Sprint but the Tiger had some extra appeal (and my wife thought it sexy). I have a Brit friend who has had a Sprint for 10 years (955cc?) and just loves it. I think your membership on bmwlt is safe. They haven't kicked me off yet anyway...

I know this is a Beemer site, so I may get in trouble for publishing this.

I was in the market for a sport-touring bike last year. I almost purchased a K1200GT. I am a long time, long distance BMW rider.

I test rode a new Triumph Sprint ST. I discovered that this is a fantastic motorcycle. I immediately purchased one with color matched hard luggage. I PAYED LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE OF A NEW BMW GT!

Iíve been riding the Sprint for about one year and Iím completely satisfied with it. I added a Pro-Oiler auto chain oiler. There are less drive issues with the auto oiler/chain and sprockets than with the problematic BMW rear drives.

What do I like best?

Wonderful passing power with an almost endless top end speed.

Seamless fuel injection. Better throttle response than any bike Iíve ridden.

Comfortable seat.

Excellent ergos (for me anyways).

Light weight.

Very simple to do maintenance. Easily removable fairing.

Shop rates are only $55 per hour.

Excellent fuel economy (45mph on mid grade average).

Two year unlimited mileage warranty.

A heavenly exhaust sound like no other bike.

The Sprint is the best sport-touring package out there. I canít believe itís such a bargain.

Yeah, yeah, ya gotta wait a day. The bike is at the dealer for the 500-mile break-in oil change. The first of the after-markets came in yesterday (CalSci windscreen). Will get that on tonite.

Love Triumphs in general and the Tiger is a GREAT new bike. Whats not to like? Its fast reliable comfy light enough can carry all the goodies and already has a bunch of stuff available for it. Sure its got a few spots but for someone who wants to ride a modern UJM with alot of character , they sure are nice......wish the wife/boss would let me get one.

Congrats on the new bike. I also have a Tiger 1050 - but I moved the other way with my LT purchase a couple of weeks ago. The engine is tremendous, the bike is very light (esp compared to the LT), and is a hoot around town. A fun ride for sure

On the negative side, the Tiger is not great two up IMHO. Depends on the amount of beer you are hauling around in a human shaped container of course, but the rear shock is not up to the task - lot of people buy Elka or other replacements. In my own case I am 6'4" and go 300, so too much for the Tiger.

The stock seat is ok, but not for long, and not for the passenger. I have a corbin on mine which seems a huge improvement, but I got my LT a week after I got the Corbin, so I have only ridden it once. I also find the riding position makes my wrists sore in about 10 minutes...I was thinking of different bars or risers or something.

Mine is about to be up for sale on eBay, so if you know of anyone looking for a barely broken in Tiger, let me know. Lots of Farkles on mine (pipes, seat, top box, heated grips etc. I am on Tiger1050.com as well. Mine with pics is listed for sale there.

I rode a 1050 Tiger before I bought my R12RT. I loved the bike. The wife on the other hand got blown around way too much. If I ever get the $ there will be a Tiger beside the RT in the garage. Have a blast with it.

Thanks David, et al. I'm thinking the Coast Highway would be funner next time. Keep me in the loop for the Cambria RTE.

I'll post some pics when I get some of the farkles added.

Kind of riding the wind in that direction myself. Several friends have turned to the KLR 650. Been thinking of picking up a TW200 for he wife to ride to work as the gas prices are making the Arabs rich and the idiot liberals are keeping our supply under ground in the natural state. But I regress.

On a ride some months ago a couple on a KLR kept up with the group even when we passed some Harleys at 90. ( at least they looked shiny from all the chrome !)

Thought process is that turning the LT into a KLR and a TW gives us each a bike that we can ride at the same time or ride together on one (KLR).

We can do a little off-roadin'. take them camping AND neither appear to have a Final Drive to worry about !

Since we have a lot of dirt roads/trails and idiot drivers, a dual sport might be a better defense against laying the fat pig (LT) down.

Well....just a thought..better get to work or I'll be sellin' the LT to fill the ammo tank in the Tahoe.

I'll chime in with my experience with my Triumph, (2002 T955i) to say that mine has been very reliable, I've had one problem with it to date (a leaking fuel line QD that was replaced under warranty) and it's coming up on around 15k not exactly babied miles. I love the T, but am going to sell it ASAP only because it's just too fast for around here. Too much traffic, stoplights, etc. to be fun, and sooner or later I'm going to crank a wheelie or something and get caught - which isn't good......
Plus now that there's an SO on the back most of the time, I need to add storage to the LT to keep up with her penchant for bringing stuff with us.
The engine is awesome - and I'm on the 955 version... I can understand what you mean about how it "just does it"!
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine, post pics of some cool off road trips when you do them!

Nice choice, Dave.

Be sure and get in for the first service at 500 miles or there abouts. They'll drain the oil and switch from semi syn to full syn (what you'll use for the rest of the life of the bike). It's an important service from Triumph's viewpoint and will be very relevant in any future warranty situations.

Now For Something Completely Different

Yup, I bought a new bike. Nope, it's not a beemer. I rode a triple cylinder Triumph Tiger 1050 a week ago. "Crikey, this is a fun machine," I thought. 114 HP, half the weight of the LT. Goes like a bat outa hell.

I spent 3 days reading about them on the various Triumph forums, discovering their plusses, minuses and quirks. Universally, riders loved their Tigers. And there are many after market farkles with which to turn it into the lighter weight adventure touring machine I always wanted. I was hooked. I took the plunge. It's a fuel-injected Blaze Orange Tiger with ABS.

I'm still in the engine break-in phase (first 1000 miles). Max RPMs depend on mileage. After 300 miles, you can take it to 6000 rpm. The odo hit this mark yesterday somewhere between Mason and Llano, Texas. OK, let's see what happens - twist throttle, and bike goes from 70 to 103 in top gear without batting an eye. No lumbering, no vibration, it just does it.

Been burning up the secure web links with farkle orders. taller windscreen from CalSci, tank bag from SW-moto, RAM mounts for GPS and XM radio, HID low beam. To come: aluminum panniers, skid plate, engine guards.

Yeah, it's got a chain. And it's a bit long legged (like the KTM). But it's a much simpler machine. All the fluid reservoirs are right there. So is the starter motor (thinking: Dick Largen recently replaced his starter on his LT. It's well buried, trust me.).

I'd been thinking about a second smaller machine for one-up touring and around town, like a F800GS (frustratingly delayed), V-Strom 650, a KLR-650 or a KTM Adventure. But I think this is going to turn into my primary ride. Going to post an ad for the LT as soon as I fix the final drive that broke coming back from Big Bend in March.

Maybe the winds of change are a blowin'. Of my local friends, two have gone FJR and one has gone Goldwing. Me, I guess after two beemers (RT and LT) and thousands of dollars of expensive repairs (two rear main seals, one slipping clutch, FD shaft seal, bad radio, bad fuel gauge, leaky steering damper, preemptive rear bearing replacement and now an FD failure), I'm just ready to do something else for awhile. I'm not angry. Stuff happens with any machine in spite of how well it's designed and made. BMW makes an outstanding product. I'm just ready to for new and different challenges and a different kind of ride.
