meese Thans for the info, Mike. I don't have exact travel dates yet, but when I do I'll be sure and post to the Euro forum. I'd love to meet up for a pint or two.

You will only be 50 Miles from me in sunny Gloucestershire. Do you need me to do any calling around for a bike? Could buy you a beer one night, often take the bike out for a spin on a wed or thur.

meese Yep, I know Tenby. Nice castle. I'll most likely be heading back to Newport sometime in early October for a week or so. Still working on where to rent a bike from.

Ah! the joy of twisties... I live right on the border with Wales, and was in Tenby (west-ish coast) at the weekend. Our planned 100 mile blast on sunday morning was spoilt because the highways agency had just resurfaced a 30 mile section of nices twisties, and with all the loose chippings we were very restricted in our speed.

Sharp idea. Too bad shipping cross oceans is so expensive. We could take off tires when half worn and swap with our "other side" brothers and sisters.

Yes, now that you told me what porridge is, I realize I enjoy it. Funny, all those decades reading about "porridge", I never knew it was just oatmeal.

Let's go intercontinental.

Greetings all you North American LT owners.

Here's an idea. Howabout all you righthand side of the road guys swap front tyres with us lefthand side of the road guys. Now that should even up the universe or at the very least, our unevenly worn front tyres.

meese That was after a 550 mile trip south, then 1,200 miles in 24 hours on California's twistiest roads, and then I was heading back north again. I stopped for fuel and realized I wasnt going any further. Luckily, there was a Yamaha dealer 5 miles away, open on a Sunday afternoon, and had the right tire in stock.

I'd changed the rear just before the trip, but thought the front would get me back. Next time, I'm just changing both. Or coming over to ride the UK for a while. I still remember some great Welsh B roads.

Hells Teeth! thats some tyre wear right there! Mines not as bad as that, I still have tread pattern visable. Maybe we should swap tyres to even up the wear patterns.

The shape of the road only contributes a very minor amount to off-side wear, the far greater distances traveled in left turns (USA) or right turns (UK) is the big culprit. The camber in the road only affects the tires at a pretty slight angle, but turning the bike with it leaned over in turns is what wears away the tread further up.

You travel approx. 3 times further in right turns than you do left ones, reversed here in the US.

For instance: On the same turn on a two lane road, if you are turning right (UK) you are on a roughly 15 ft radius, 90 degree turn is about 24 feet of travel while leaned to the right. Turning left, approx. 5-6 feet radius, for about 9-10 feet travel in the turn while leaned left. Also, on town/residential streets I know most of us turn right (US) slower than we turn left, so probably you turn left slower than you turn right, putting even more stress on the tire treads when you are traveling the greater turn distances.

Even if you go somewhere where you experience a lot more left turns than right, most of us return the same way, so it evens out. We basically make the same number of right turns as left, so ride a lot more distance on the outside of turns than on the inside.

Doh! Must be having a senior moment

Hi guys,

how stupid do i feel now... never even crossed my mind to think of the shape of the road, Doh!. Oh well, guess I have a couple hundred miles left in her, and then I'll stick a new set on for the summer.

Yes yes I know... I'll not be riding too much in the winter as I have lots of work to do around the house, so I'll maybe only get a few short weekend trips in before it's time to strip her down for a nice clean before bed time.

Guess I can sleep easy tonight knowing I've not got a front end strip down to do.

Simple answer. Same as the reason we wearout the left side first here in the US.

The reason is that you always spend more time and distance leaned over in right turns in the UK, left turns in the US. Much larger radius thus time and distance on the "outside" of a turn, so more tire (tyre)wear on that side.

PS: The reason you see it more on the front tire, is that is the tire that does most of the work in turning the bike, and it is smaller so less rubber on the road in a turn than the rear tire, which basically just goes along for the ride.

Ted Hi Mike -

It may have to do with the road(s) being higher (crowned) in the middle. Here in the States, some folks experience left-side tire wear since we drive on the righthand side of the road. Expect the opposite would be true for you.

Guess you need to get out of the UK for a spell to even 'em up again!

Strange front tyre wear

Hi guys,

looking for a little input before I grab for the tool kit. Front tyre fitted about 18 months ago, little under 6K miles, I try and keep the pressures right front and rear 42/48, tyres are Metzler's.

When I look at the profile of the tyre it looks like I've only been going round right handers, as all the wear is on that side. I've just done a 400 Mile round trip fully loaded, Other half, camping gear, kitchen sink and 9 pairs of shoes.

Now I know the tyre should last 7-9 k, but does this sound like a fork problem? I've not dropped it yet, and I've not bumped into anything, even lightly.
