Not new to motorcycling or BMW. Started riding at 15 on a Honda 90. Worked up to a 750 in college. I've had an airhead and several K75's. Currently have a 94 K75S, the big bannana [dakar yellow] Thinking of taking some longer trips and there is a 2000 K1200LT icon not too far away. I was thinking more of an K1100RS but those K1200LT's look comfy. I could do longer trips on the 75 but The lack of wind protection and wind noise get to me after a while, even with Plugs and a full face helmet [Shoei] I do like the fact the earlier K's are somewhat simpler and was also looking at a K100RS, but the K100 is not very different than my K75S. I will be riding solo, my wife doesn't like to ride [which may be a blessing] So what should I be looking for if I go see this 1200, other than the usual. I know these are heavy, but I;m only 64 , am 6 foot, and in reasonably good shape and 170 lbs wet.
seller wants $3400 obo. bike has 28000 miles. looks clean and well cared for, looking at the pics.
Ignore the youtube rant. You can find rants about everything. This forum exists because lots of people love the KLT. It's a wonderful bike, and it's not perfect. The idiosyncrasies are well covered over the two decades on this forum. I'm on my 3rd KLT. Once you get used to the beast, it's very comfortable--long or short trips. I think $3400 is too much for a 20 year old bike, even if he paid $30k for it new. Low miles is good, but rubber doesn't improve with age. If you have to do a complete major service on the bike, you'll pay a dealer ~$1500 or so. If he's already done that recently, factor that into price.
I agree, the price is too high. Although those of us with the same age LT feel it is worth more! The reality is you can do better. And the low miles may be more of a hassle than a good thing. These bikes go forever, and a well-cared for bike that has been updated (brake lines, final drive, etc) may be something to ask about when you search.
You are on the right track looking at Kirk's videos-very helpful as you enter this phase of bike shopping.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, but also take advantage of the 'search' for any topic. This is the best forum you can find.
Keep us posted. We will all enjoy watching you spend your money!
