Life on the Gold Coast

Hi. We live on Queensland, Australia's Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise). White beaches, mild weather, great surf, and a hinterland with a ton of exquisite bike roads.

I have a 2015 wethead R1200RT the Aussie model of which is fully optioned, minus the GPS. We pay around AU$30,000 for the on-road package and another $1200 for the GPS.

This is my third RT. Previously had a 1999 model (sold to a mate at 160,000 klm - he's still riding it); a 2010 SE fully optioned with large and small top boxes (sold at 59,000 klm to a (now) mate - down South in Victoria); and currently riding the 2015.

Each model has been better than the last and the 2015 just blows me away. It's 10 kph faster in the corners - and I haven't suddenly improved as a rider, though it does extend that invitation.

I like to take the tupperware off and dice with the Ducatis; then put the plastic back on and take my wife for a coffee (average 400 klm round trip - I call it a "short cut", she calls it "lying" - we're still married, so what the hell!); or put the Saddleman PC 3000 on the back and load Coco the Mini Schnauzer in and go for a local coffee.

My logo is one of our 12 grandkids. They get turns on keeping me company on the road when the Missus is otherwise engaged. They are not allowed to tell their mother how fast we go.

Re: Life on the Gold Coast

Phil, it's a fair hop from Philip Island to the Gold Coast, but if you decide to see some of the country, give us a call.

Last time we were near Phillip Island was 2003.

I've attached a write up of the ride - search for "Cowes" within the document. That should put a smile on your face, and give you something to keep an eye out for when you are down there.

We loaded the 2009 R1200RT with a 2 person tent, 2 self-inflating mattresses, 2 sleeping bags, camping gear and clothes for 10 days. I think we tipped the scales at more than 100kg over OEM load limit but the bike handled it, and we had a ball.

Peter,
I enjoyed reading your tour write up. I have been on some of those roads, be it back in the late 60's & also when I went home with the wife after retiring. We toured around for 5 mths (can't do that now as the OZ Govt only lets Canadians (visitors) in for 3 mths at a time.
If all works out I will contact you if i get over home in Sept 2016.

Hi Chris. I bought a Saddleman PC3000 (as in 'pet carrier') online from the States and it's been a 'more than adequate' solution, though any reservations are about its lack of rigidity which may be more about how I've mounted it than about the build of it.

Good points: Securing point for Coco's harness. I use a carabiner clip through the D-ring on her harness, and back that up with a reusable zip tie for safety (JIC). Comes with its own water and food bowls and storage for same. Has cross flow ventilation through mesh vents both sides, mesh vent on top with 'head hole', and storage pockets for lead, etc. Well made, quality stitching and fittings, easy to snap on and off the rear cargo carrier. Has a waterproof liner in case of 'accidents' and I've put a thick lambs wool mat on top of that for added cushioning and comfort.

Niggles: I don't put anything under the soft base of the PC and it's wider than the cargo rack, so the carrier droops a little either side. It would be improved with a stiffer floor. Ditto for the sides. Pulling the fastening straps down to secure the PC bends the thin plastic side support lining and reduces the internal space - still, Coco is a smallish Mini Schnauzer so this is not a problem for us.

Observations. Dog-in-the-back is the perfect defuser for toey cagers when you filter in front of them at the lights. If I had a buck for every time I've caught a rear mirror glimpse of the driver behind me grinning like a fool and snapping smartphone shots, I'd be half way to my next bike.

Pics to follow.

Here we are on the old 2010 bike with Ewok eyes!

You'll see how the bag sags at the base, but as I said it works for us.

I fasten the bag via its 2 front D-rings via reusable zipties to the pillion hand grips, and run straps from the back under, through the cargo rack and back up and click!

Re: Life on the Gold Coast

Great shots. I'm sure Indy would love to come riding, but not allowed in NSW I think...apart from 1 dog (blue cattle) that goes on all the bike rallies, I think he got a special exemption after a lot of community support for him and his rider.

Re: Life on the Gold Coast

I am half way between you guys.
Mid North Coast, near Port Macquarie.
We have our own great mountain ride, Wauchope to Walcha, but normally we just go up to Gingers Creek, have breakfast and back down the mountain again.

My son lives at North Lakes (Brisbane), so me and my wife (she rides a 600 Diversion, unrestricted) are planning to ride up there in the near future.
It will be an overnight stop as I just can't do more then 300km in the saddle.

Check your State laws. As far as I am aware the ban is on having the dog in front of the rider. Nothing about having them behind the rider - then add in 'suitably restrained' etc and I can't imagine a blanket ban.

All a bit different to the old days (1970) in Parkes when the local copper gave me a bike license because I got around the block alive on a Honda ST70, and you could ride with a fog stuck down the front of your jacket!

Alf, let me know when you're coming through and I'll show you the back roads to Lake Albert.
