New K1200 LT owner

Good afternoon,

I just acquired a 2003 K1200LT my dad bought over a year ago.

I don't have any history on the maintenance nor a manual since it was bought at an auction, my dad passed and i dont think he did any maintnance on it either. I read some conversations here on what battery to buy and went for the Odyssey. It drives well and tires are in good condition. I do need to change the break pads and i was thinking on doing a full service on it since i have no history on what has been done to it in the past.

I called a couple of shop around and the only ones that are confident on the work are the BMW dealers. Is this the only way to go? Im located in the Detroit metro area.

The dashboard lights are a little dim so I'm thinking it might need some work there too. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Regards,

Welcome JP.
Someone will fling you a manual, available on PDF copies.

Plenty of threads here advising new owners what to look for maintenance wise, also look in technical section for how-to's.

Also look at Kirk's videos on Illinois BMW riders (google it)... Lots of good tips!
Enjoy your new ride!

Re: New K1200 LT owner

A lot of owners do their own maintenance but I have seen listed on Craigslist under motorcycles and their make adds for maintenance work by BMW mechanics that are retired or no longer work for BMW. Hourly rate is usually pretty good. Might be worth a look/see, dealers can be painful. Like that color. Seafoam in the gas tank. Change the final drive fluid and the oil and finish the riding season. Both are very easy jobs. Enjoy.

The ride is fresh under diamond skies, makes me glad to be alive.
