It's my pleasure to invite you to a Tech Session!

The Session will be held at my place near Rushville, OH on Saturday, June 17. Arrive as early as you like, but I think we'll start around 8:00... 9:00?

This is a first for me, so I'll tell you what I know now and you can ask questions:

1. I am located approx. 45 minutes SE of Columbus, Ohio in eastern Fairfield County.
2. It's a very rural setting, on 3 acres, surrounded by farms with just a couple of houses nearby, and 15 minutes from the fabulous Hocking Hills. Did you like STC II? You'll like the Hocking Hills. Same roads, just no Smoky Mountains.
3. 30x40 detached garage, with concrete floor, electric, hot/cold water, lights, FRIDGE, 4 overhead doors, 20x52 concrete patio (10x40 under cover). Gravel drive leads from a paved road to this building. Watch your step.
4. Plenty of room for tent camping if you want to stay overnight. Closest hotels are in Lancaster, about 15 minutes away.
5. DOOR PRIZES: BMW Motorcycles of Columbus is offering door prizes. How cool is that?
6. Lunch will be served, catered by my catering wife, a fabulous cook. Depending on attendance and interest, dinner may be served also. I will ask for donations to offset that expense, please.

At this point we are looking at a HID install (yours truly), new shocks (Joe/Messenger13), and other services to be determined. Joe will be on hand to assist with wrenching. I will be on hand to say "What's a wrench?" :D

We are looking for someone to bring a lift with them, if possible.

Please reply with your name and any services/installs you are thinking about doing or having done, and post your questions here.

Joe, what have I forgotten to mention?

Umm...DONATIONS! Oh, you did mention that. :D

You done good Howard. I think the questions and comments will naturally flow in, and we'll handle them one at a time.

Thanks for hosting Howard! It's about time us Buckeyes got off our collective duffs and did some wrenchin', eatin' & drinkin', riding, camping, laughing, and all that other good stuff that happens when a group of LT'ers gets together.

COME ONE!!!
COME ALL!!!

Hey Howard

Glad you were able to get this together, I will do my best to clear the calander for that date. I dont think I will need any service on my ride, but would love to see the HID and other things being done. Although maybe I should pick up a set of EBC or the other brake pads and put them in, I can't take the squeeelllling any more.

I've got a tentative business trip but if it falls through, I may try to make it there, just to meet some folks and put faces to names.

Capt. Gilless, if you show up you'll get 2 things:

1. Sweet Tea (my wife knows how to make it). She'll even make you a mint julep if you're inclined (with Woodford Reserve, of course).
2. Longest Distance Traveled award

Hey all count me in!!

Howard-I will be in attendance & can help w/ at least the food buys..did I mention I worked in a meat market?? How's a few tenderloins of beef sound-grilled served on silver-dollar buns w/horseradish sauce or whatever, just let me know meats needed I'll take care of it (lunchmeats as well). Check w/your lovely and apparently understanding wife and let me know. all I need is guidance on HID install.
If wives or SO's are coming I'll bring Mona if not I'm sure she'll keep occupied. Anything at all you need just let me know.

Awesome. This is turning out nicely.

Mark Kinney (Dayton area) is bringing his wife if he attends. My wife will be here. Haven't heard about other wives/SOs. All are welcome! I don't think this is a boys-only event. (is it...?)

Mike, thanks for the offers. I'll check with my wife about food and such. Typically she likes to take care of all the details, but with your connections...

I'll let you know. Thanks.

After changing my shocks and doing who knows how many HID installs that day, I was thinking of doing a little GPS demonstration and/or training.

Anyone interested in that?
YES
I've never used a GPS; would love to see how it does its "thing".
Excellent idea.

Update - Please Read and Respond with Comments

We've had additional discussions on this thread today regarding the Ohio Tech Session. Here are some additional thoughts my wife and I are having. Please reply with your comments/suggestions.

1. Food: We hosted a similar tech session for VW TDIs last fall and lost money on that. On the one hand, a host should cheerfully bear that burden. On the other hand, should that happen? That said: what do you think about a fixed price for lunch and a fixed price for dinner? Kind of like we did at STC II.

2. Wives/SOs: a couple of guys have asked if spouses/SOs can attend. I think YES -- bring 'em. It's a fun day in the country for anyone who attends. Wives/SOs were at STC II and had a pretty good time... I think. We want to include our favorite gals, don't we?

I'm thinking (can I use one term for wives and SOs going forward?) wives will be bored if they are here all day. They're welcome to ride, wrench, read a book (outside, or inside our living room), sew, chat, take a walk down a country road -- whatever they please. However, if there is interest, we could put together a trip to Amish Country (1.5-2 hours away); the Longaberger Homestead (wives LOVE this place -- lots of neat shopping for items for the home in the Martha Stewart style; Coshocton (historic canal town with neat shops, 1 hour away); historic Lancaster (10 minutes away; nice shops, restored mansions, museums). Get the idea? If you want to bring your wife, then bring her but think about what she's going to do all day. You know best. I hope I havent' beaten this issue to death; just want your gals to have fun, too.

Not to step on any toes here, but just an offering from one who's had many tech sessions and visited (can you say put to work?) a few:

Unless the ladies are close friends, or you live in an extremely exciting area, they'll be bored to tears. Imagine being thrust amongst a bunch of strangers, forced to kitchen duty and clean up and having to make conversation with someone you likely have nada in common. Sandar the mag always takes off to the coast, Dallas or shopping.

Whatever you decide to cook, plan your menu and then double. These boys can eat.

Be sure to have lots of spare parts around. Namely tupperware screws, well nuts and fasteners and other assorted stuff. Ya never know what'll break. I keep air tools, a 220v welder and some large oxy/acetylene bottles for those tough removals, or in case I feel like destroying something. Weapons of various caliber strewn about the place is fun and so is multitudes of sharp devices. I also keep about 20 valve buckets just in case you're in the middle of an impromptu 12 thou service and the valves are out. Brake pads, tune up stuff and lots of oil are a must. Yeah, I've had a few of these, and man, I really enjoy them. (PS: hide your good ceegars)

Grif...you da man. As usual! :) And your advice is right on target. I'm not sure how in-depth we're going to get as far as service goes just yet. So far, all I've heard about is HID installs, changing shocks (mine), and probably a fluids change or two. Oh, and some GPS demo'ing and/or training. Of course, this is ALL subject to change. But for now, I think we can keep the welder turned off. :D

As for the ladies, it's a tender subject, but it's important that anyone bringing their better half should know what really to expect . . . and if they have other options. Let's face it...men & women are different. Take 10 men that are virtual strangers, throw them in a garage with some bikes, tools, oil, and FOOD . . . and you've got a party! Women are just a little more complex than that. ;)

Grif, thanks for saying this more candidly than I was brave enough to. It's my concern (as host :) ) that the gals will be bored. That said, they are welcome to attend and do whatever. They're all big girls and can plan ahead, watch the wrenching, or maybe take their guy's bike into Lancaster to see the (General) Sherman museum, the Georgian mansion, art galleries, antique shops, and so on.

My wife won't know any of the ladies who show up, and they won't know her. She's planning on doing the whole kitchen/serving/cleanup thing herself and is comfortable with that. Some help with carrying stuff from house to shop, general cleanup, etc. is always appreciated but not expected. I'd like to think that women are like men -- show up and form quick bonds centered around our mutual interests -- but after 28 years of marriage it's dawning on me that that isn't the case. Duh.

We have 2 wives attending, so far; both of those are short drives from their home. They'll have to figure out what to do for the time they're at the Tech Session, but all of the options previously mentioned are there for them. The world is their oyster!

Smoking: anyone caught smoking inside my shop will be shot and then asked to leave. Survivors will be shot again, by my wife. :D Smoke 'em if you got 'em -- but outside, please. We have 5 kinds of flammable stuff inside the shop and a 300-gallon fuel tank outside the shop. No sense in blowing out the neighbors' windows and getting seriously killed, as they say. Hopefully this is seen as a reasonable request. I didn't see a lot of smokers at STC except for the after-hours cigars and so on.

I have no parts, new or spare, or fasteners. Anyone considering service work should plan on bringing their own things. I have basic wrenches, hand tools and 2 portable air compressors.

Thanks for the easy out on SOs...Mona will probably head to Stubenville area to see families new babies-again. This was the answer I was hoping for, a bored wife is ..well not as fun.

My wife dragged me through the Longaberger "Cult Compound" a couple years ago after a romantic weekend in a castle at the Mohican state forrest...

Hint #1: Don't even bring the possibility up to your wife
Hint #2: If she already knows about it, hide the credit cards

A bored wife is no fun, but still a much better alternative to "Girls Gone Wild in Dresden"

What? You don't think you'll walk in the house, find them drunk and watching a porno movie?

Dood, you need to seriously loosen up... blowing shit up is fun!!!!!

See, now you're missing the most vital thang here: Man Shopping. "But, hon, I really need these new tools and parts".

I'll alert the Fairfield County Sheriff's office to be on the lookout for you. Hope they don't block all roads leading into Fairfield County, like last time you passed this way... ;)

That's funny. Dresden is about an hour away, and for those who haven't been there:

HOLY COW, it's the center of the Longaberger Universe madness. Don't go alone (as the sole man) in a group of women. You'll be ripped to shreds getting onto or off the bus, entering a store, and so on. You think a mother bear and a cub are something to stay away from? Don't step between a sale item and a female shopper in Dresden. You'll be lucky if you survive.

No, I'm down with that. Bring your stuff over. There is an abandoned quarry 1/2 mile from house; it's where we do most of our plinking. Plenty of room to blow your stuff up. :D
