Pennsylvinia route 6

Garyem and I are thinking of cruising down to check out route 6 in PA. Any info would be helpful. What to see, what to avoid, where to camp, where to get on and where to get off.

Thanks for any help.

Good question, we were thinking around the Oil City area to Scranton but are open to suggestions.

Re: Pennsylvinia route 6

Check out the Straub's brewery in St. Marys, PA, home of the Eternal Tap.
Hills Creek State Park, near Wellsboro is a great place to camp. Make sure you go into town and have breakfast at the Wellsboro Diner. Take a short ride up to either of the two state parks that guard the northern entrance to PA's Grand Canyon (Colton Point and Leonard Harrison).

If you plan to spend a few days at Hills Creek State Park, it's a short and pleasant ride on Route 15 north to Corning, New York to tour the glass works museum or head for Harris Hill in Elmira, NY and take a ride in a sailplane. Both are easy day trips from Wellsboro.

Be advised that with the Marcellus Shale drilling there has been an increase in truck traffic and in some areas the road surface has paid the price. Other than that, it's a great ride, especially in the fall when the colors are out.

Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton is worth a visit if you enjoy steam powered locomotives.

Take care,
Chris

In the general area, but across the Delaware River in NY State (Barryville NY) is Cedar Rapids Campground. It would make a nice rest stop. Raft, tube, and canoe rentals. Very biker-friendly with a bar/restaurant/showers and a huge deck overlooking the river. Our local club just had our rally there this past weekend. Good folks.

Re: Pennsylvinia route 6

Well I finally got around to uploading some pics to Photobucket. We had a great ride despite one day of riding 350 miles, 250 of it in the rain. PA has some very nice roads and pretty countryside.

I had a very close call with a black bear, I was going about 60 and he ran out right in front of me probably less than 100' from me. No time to get a pic of him!!!

Thanks for the info, it helped to make the ride better.

Re: Pennsylvinia route 6

Funny how I've driven down there for years, usually going north and south on 219 or 62. Until now I've never even heard of how good route 6 was. Now that I've read this thread I'm going to make this one of my weekend tours.

I'll add a few things to see for those of thinking of going:

Zippo Museum in Bradford, PA

http://www.zippo.com/about/article.aspx?id=1584

We've stayed here for the last couple of years in Smethport, PA, nice and friendly to riders :

Cheap, clean and locally owned, one of a dying breed. After a good nights sleep we head over to Pieogiemama T & K's Dinor

http://www.pierogiemama.com/Pages/aboutus.aspx

For a great breakfast. We do it every year on a ride down south.

Don't forget Route 666, you can even pick up a t shirt

T shirts: http://www.hickorycreekarcheryandspo...-T-shirts.html

If anyone has anything else to add, please do as this will be on my ride list for 2014.

Cheers,
Tross
