Batten Down the Hatches

I was going to drive to the office as usual to work today when I heard the forecast: rain/sleet mix turning into freezing rain, then ice and possibly several inches of snow. After hearing the forecast I went down to the barn to move stuff around, making room to put my wife's car inside. (It's usually parked at the house, which does not have an attached garage.) The freezing rain is already here.

I'll be working from home today - a benefit of working in IT (sometimes).

We have enough gas on hand to run the generator for 48 hours if we need to, and we are good to go with food. The generator provides water and basic electric needs, including the well pump, during a power outage; unfortunately, it doesn't have the capacity to run our heat pump.

Be careful out there today. For you retired folks (ahem - Mike N. in Cleveland) just roll over and pull the blanket up close.

Re: Batten Down the Hatches

I fueled up at I-77 & I-70 last night at around 5:30 & Verizon had sent a blizzard warning to my phone for the area warning not to travel. Beckley WV is the only area that had bad weather for me last night. I had 34 degree temp. & heavy fog for about one hour going thru Beckley. I had high winds & rain the last hour before I got home.

We were out this morning on errands and getting provisions. We were expecting it in the afternoon but it hit us a 11:00am. Wicked driving, made it home ok. Making big pot o Chili.

Dave, I read about your travel to Michigan and back. Kind of dicey this time of year... but I understand your reason for going.

If you were at I-77 and I-70 you were practically in the neighborhood - maybe a solid hour away. Glad you made it home OK.

You guys in the Cleveland area really have to like snow to stay there! That lake-effect snowfall can be impressive.

I filled up the last 2 empty gas cans I had and there was more on hand than I thought, so we are good for up to a four-day power outage. An outage that long would be very unusual, although it happened after Hurricane Ike. Every scenario is different. Sometimes it's a car that takes out a utility pole, sometimes it's weather (usually ice and snow) that makes for a long outage.

We've had maybe a couple inches of freezing and slush with just a bit of snow - nothing like you got today. That may change overnight and tomorrow!

Huzza for Climate Change! The 18" of white stuff on my deck will be gone by the week end when the temps reach 50 deg F (10 deg C.)

My daughter's birthday was on New Year's Day so I sent her this Birthday Cake photo. Yes, the candle is lit!

Re: Batten Down the Hatches

That's funny stuff. Every road in my county but the one I live on is thawed right now. Snow is still on the ground. I'm hoping them 50 degree temps melt off my road so I can test out my new Shoei Qwest helmet.

Re: Batten Down the Hatches

Hi,
Funny, you guys are talking about snow storms. We are experiencing Heat storms. Today across Sydney it is expected to reach 109 degrees with strong winds. They have forecast catastrophic bush fire conditions so we are all locked up in our houses with our Air Conditioners on.

Were you are, too cold to ride, here, to DAMN hot to ride.

Stay safe.

Brian.

Re: Batten Down the Hatches

Brian, I'd like to see for myself that it's too hot to ride. Right now it's not that it is too cold here to ride (we are in the middle of what they call a "January thaw") it's that there is too much snow/ice on some roads to get a bike out. In my case, my driveway is lined on both sides with trees; this keeps the afternoon sun from melting several inches of ice on the driveway, which effectively keeps the LT in the garage.

The roads in my area are clear but my driveway is not!

Current temp in Sydney at 1:15pm is ~ 40-41C or about 106F.
As we're on the coast we also get the humidity... thats what makes it too hot to ride.. not just the heat. My poor LT is parked outside work getting baked at the moment.. comfy 23 C inside work.. and I ain't going outside till its time to go home!
News report this morning said the high record was around 47C (116F) back in 1939 I think... and the road tar was melting... that could make it tricky to ride!

Re: Batten Down the Hatches

We're still enjoying a traditional "January thaw". 40s today, 50s tomorrow and Friday, 61 on Saturday. I may be able to get the LT out for a short ride, if the ice melts off the driveway. It's still 3"-4" thick where I drove over the snow with the truck; the snow gets packed down and turns into ice the very first time you do that. In any event, we're grateful for the warmer temps.

Yeh, know what you mean Ean, We are looking at a high of 45 tomorrow as well. That is 45 Celsius. That is 113 in Fahrenheit. Not sure if the air flow on the helmet will do the bis.

That being said, with the reflected heat from the road, it is not pleasant riding for any distance. As Chris said, we also have to put up with melting bitumen.

That said, it is only for a couple of days a year. Our time to hibernate with the aircon blazing.

ride safe.
