If I'll find a lot of gravel I will probably change my plans and head from Gladstone to Munising, via Rt-2 and Rt- 94. Any other suggestions?
From Munising, I'll ride up to Grand Marais, Deer Park, Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Paradise and spend the night in Brimley.
All suggestions and especially gravel road avoidance tips will be greatly appreciated.
OK, I will try to get you around the good stuff of the central UP area.
Starting in Gladstone, go north on M-35. It is straight for a bit up to McFarland, then beyond that is one of the better state highways around for motorcycles. M-35 all the way up to Negaunee. East on M-28 thru Marquette and along Lake Superior shoreline to Munising. Now for the GREAT stuff. Starting at Munising is Alger County road H-58 which traverses its way through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to Grand Marais. H-58 is NEW pavement...opened October 2010....and is one of the most spectacular rides around here. From Grand Marais, you can continue on H-58 (and whatever the Luce County road number is) to Deer Park. NOTE!!!! This segment has nearly 15 miles of gravel.
If you choose not to continue to Deer Park, you can double back on H-58 or go south on M-77, which in itself is a nice drive to Seney and M-28 again. If you go to Deer Park with the intent of getting to Tahquamenon Falls, be aware that there is a bridge out on M123 north of Newberry closing the highway at Murphy Creek. Not sure of exact date of planned bridge re-opening, but was previously announced to be 3rd week of June.
There are a couple of other resources to help in your planning. http://mdotnetpublic.state.mi.us/drive/
You can also stop at any of the MDOT welcome centers in the UP to pick up UPcruising's ride guide which has maps of rides all over the UP. Most convenient for you to pick up a guide might be the the MDOT welcome center at Menominee, MI immediately after crossing the river on US-41 into Michigan. I know they have guides...delivered them myself
The guides are also available directly from UPcruising...small shipping charge.
I hope this offers some helpful suggestions for you in planning your UP trip. Glad to help
