Where should I cross the Mississippi?

My riding buddy and I are riding east Tuesday and I'm concerned where we should cross the river with the current conditions being what they are. The original plan was to cross at Cairo, IL on Friday and head towards West Virginia, but now I'm wondering if we should look north instead. If we have to we'll go on the Interstates that we were trying to avoid in the first place, final destination is Stamford, CT Saturday or Sunday, big mileage days are not a problem. Any advice from those in the area will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Where should I cross the Mississippi?

I checked IL DOT and there are no closures issued for I57 near Cairo. This is all they had

I-57 The Rend Lake Rest Area, Southbound side is closed.
US-60/62 Bridge at Cairo is closed for repairs, length of the closure is not known at this time.

Have been watching the news but that area has been off the grid since they blew the levee last week to save the town from flooding. Looks like the plan worked. I have been through there several times over the last few years. Nice ride.

Re: Where should I cross the Mississippi?

I hate driving through St. Louis. Usually come in on I-57 from east & I-44 from west. I've learned to take the I-57 Memphis south exit from either direction. Then you go @ 15 miles until you see the first big iron bridge and cross and head back north. Longer, but takes about the same time as driving through, and a LOT safer. The problem is that the connection to I-57 to I-44 pinches down real quick in a lot of heavy traffic, and its hard to get into the correct lane as cars are backing up to make that exit. I've seen a lot of vehicles do a brake lock up trying to get over into the correct lane. Driving through is not quite as bad coming from the west as from the east, but still not good. The Memphis exit is no sweat.

Re: Where should I cross the Mississippi?

Thanks for the info guys. We are also trying to avoid St. Louis, that's why we were looking at Cairo instead. I think we'll go for it there.
