Dad

My Dad passed away peacefully at Hospice House of Citrus County January 26th.

He was always one of the biggest (6'4") strongest guys I ever knew.

Born in rural Holland in 1927, his mother passed away early,
that left his father with eight kids and a bakery to run.

There was no time for school, there was work to be done.
In World War 2, he was a musician in the Dutch army and became a German POW,
they called it "Arbeits Dienst" what that meant is "slave labor" building roads and working in munitions factories.

As they were being transported the English Air force "buzzed" the train,
all the passengers were ordered off while they "shot up" the locomotive,

Dad kept running, escaped and spent the last two years hiding out at German farmers
(they desperately needed farm help as their son's were all drafted.)

After the war he got back into his music,
he was "a rock star" of the late 40's-50's and into the 60's.

I spent many a weekend on the back of his motorcycle going from one festival or musical competition to another,
(he always took first prize)

In 1964 at the age of 39 he had the courage to take his wife and four children and start a new life in America,
we arrived in the USA unable to speak the language, carrying everything we owned in a couple of suitcases.

He worked two jobs for several years, then spent 22 years working for the Keebler Co. in the bakery.
Even though he was a very smart man it was the best he could do since he never made it past grade school.

With hard work, courage and determination he was a able to comfortably retire in Florida
to pursue his hobby farm with goats, rabbits, doves.

He taught me a lot about life and myself
and I'm certain that my passion for motorcycles was born on the back of his bike.

I'll miss him for a long time.

Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. You were very fortunate to have him around. My Dad passed 27 years ago and way too young. I think about him daily.
Awesome pix. Thanks for posting them.

Re: Dad

Sorry about the loss of your father. Mine past away last year and some of the best times with him was traveling the country on motorcycles. He passed his love of motorcycles to me and I am now passing it along to his grandson.

I am sure your father is proud of your love of them and your willingness to assist others in this sport. May he rest in pease.

Being Dutch myself, I can only thank your father for what he did for us. I am only 36, and never seen a war from up close, I still think your father is the main reason for us to live in peace and liberty.

My dad died March 4th 2005, so it's a kind of special day for me as well...

Condolences, Hans. It's tough when the good guys get the calling to go when we're least ready for it. I'm really glad you and your Dad were blessed in sharing many events in life that have led to fond memories for you to enjoy. He sounds like he was a great family man and deserving of high honor and praise. I really enjoyed your eulogy to him, and I thank you for sharing.

Re: Dad

Hans,

I am so sorry for your loss. My father passed away in 2006 and there is not a day that his influence and life-lessons don't cross my mind.

Some may find the following two passages corny but they have provided a great deal of comfort to me. I share them with utmost respect:

Don't Grieve For Me

Don't grieve for me, For now I'm free
I'm following paths my God laid for me
I took his hand, I heard him call.......
Then turned and bid farewell to all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work, to play
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found my peace.....at close of day.

And if my parting left a void
then fill it with remembered joy.
A laugh, a friend, a smile, a kiss...
Ah, yes, these I, too, will miss.

Be not burdened....deep with sorrow
I wish you sunshine for tomorrows.
My life's been full.... I've savored much
Good friends, good times and a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts and share with me.
My God wants me now... He has set me free.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me, and I am not here to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me.

I know how much you love me as much as I love you,
And each time you think of me I know you'll miss me to.

But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That Jesus came and called my name and took me by the hand.

He said my place is ready in heaven far above,
And that I have to leave behind all those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I'd always thought it wasn't my time to die.

I had so much to live for and so much yet to do,
It seems almost impossible that I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared and all the fun we had.

If I could of stayed for just a little while,
I'd say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realize that this could never be,
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things that I'd miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through Heaven's gate and felt so much at home,
As God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne.

He said "This is eternity, And all I've promised you,
Today your life on earth is past, but here it starts anew."

"I promise no tomorrow but today will always last,
And since each day's the same here there's no longing for the past."

So when tomorrow starts without me don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me I'm right here in your heart.

Our prayers to you and yours........... John

Re: Dad

I am very sorry for your loss. My father was also born in 1927 and I fear he is very near the end of his life; I will miss him greatly. Your father would be very proud of you and honored by the wonderful tribute you shared with the members of this forum. It is readily apparant he exemplified the traits of character and integrity, and is a bona-fide example of the make-up of "the greatest generation".
