PIAA 1100X issues

I am becoming 'less-than-pleased' with my lights. Another one burned out last weekend. At +/- 40$, it is becoming discouraging. I have seen here and elsewhere of the new LED version of the 1100x. It looks as if the LED bulb assembly will fit directly into the original housing with no wiring changes. Where can I find these LED bulbs? I haven't found any at my normal online retailers. Dhogey had his system installed in August last year and within just a couple of days recently, both burned out.

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

If the Pias are focused? changing where the light is made will drastically alter the focus.

Have u considered the cheap HID auto kits using the same bulb type?

By the way, did you run a direct run to the battery via the PIAA relay?

Power is drawn indirectly from battery through a Fuzeblock FZ-1. Trigger is drawn from parking light in headlight assembly.

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

You might try a direct run to the battery, course, fuse the line. Its a looooooong shot, but that might solve why your bulbs have such a short life?

The rumor is the battery has fewer spikes than any lines.

If that works, electricians call a direct line the fuse panel a "home-run". You can baffle people when you tell them a home run solved your problem. ;-))

Tap for the LED and relay shouldn't matter.

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

My 1100x are powered from the battery via the relay that came with lights kit.
I do need to replace the bulbs about every year and a half. I make sure to turn them off when shutting down the engine and I tun them back on once the engine is running again.
How often do you have to replace yours?

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

I just replace mine after about a year, I was in the habit of leaving them never shutting them off, I guess I should shut them off and turn them on like you do.

I got a little careless when installing a new one and broke the two little connectors right off the back of the bulb boy that ticks me off, another 40 bucks down the drain.

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

The halogen 1100 is an obsolete lamp. And because it is tiny it traps a lot of heat. And PIAA bulbs are short life types. So either switch to a std bulb from your auto parts place if you want to save $
OR- if you want a decent modern light setup without spending megabucks, cut the 1100s off and throw them away. Then wire in a pair of SP120s from VisionXWholesale. About $200 and a major improvment in performance and life as well as build quality.

There are other LED alternatives, some cheap, some larger, some (but more $) brighter.
They are making all of the shorter range halogen obsolete but have yet to establish superiority over the best halogens or HIDs as long range driving lights (though there are a few models on the verge of that- the next design generation may put them over the top).

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

Just a data point. Ole Toad has been wearing the PIAA 1100x lights since 2000. Never replaced a bulb. They're run thru the kit supplied relay and controlled by a BMW OEM rocker switch assembly mounted next to the front brake reservoir. Used for night riding only.

Scott, I had to buy three last year, I found them online, not from PIAA. I searched them out. I'm on my phone now but could try to locate the info later if you need it.

David: I'd be interested in your source for the PIAA compatible LED replacement bulbs, just in case at this point (have had my PIAAs for about a year so far with none burning out….yet). Thanks!

Re: PIAA 1100X issues

A real 85W bulb in that dinky housing will surely flame out young. The 1100s I used years ago had H-3 type halogens so you could stick anyone's H-3 (any wattage) in them. Anything over 55W actual power is too much though

IMO, there as little to nothing to like about 1100s compared to the somewhere between 50 and 100 other types of lights I've installed and used. They're small and light which makes them easy to mount on bikes and that's about all the good that can be said.

LEDs advertised as direct subs for halogen bulbs generally don't work well. Its buyer beware country if you go that route. If PIAA sells complete lap guts you can just sub into the housing, that would be the best choice. Call/ask.

You'd be better served with some purpose built LED lamps- some are not at all expensive such as those sold over at advrider (serviceable but not top build quality)
