DDM Hi-Beam Upgrade Report - they're not just bright!

I Upgraded my high beam (already had an HID low beam upgrade from a a couple of years ago). For $24.95, it was the best deal ever. Came to $40.42 with tax and shipping.

I followed Raffy's advice (from this thread), about coming in from the top initially; best advice I got there was how to modify the STOCK high beam light holder to be used on the new bulb. For me, it worked better to just go ahead and remove the nose cone.

I couldn't get my ham-fists to work in that small area, and with the cone removed, it just made it easier to work on both the light holder, and get the ballasts (high and low) strapped into the best spots.

HUGE difference in light output! Check out the two attached pics. "Old" shows the stock Hi Beam (with 6500 degree HID low beam). the "New" picture shows the new 55w 5000 degree Hi-Beam in place.

Lighting in the garage was almost the same, and camera postition was the same - but you can see how the new high beam completely washes out the rest of the garage light, making it look like it was actually dark.

They're not just bright... They're "Oh Crap!" bright!

Nice Brian ..
I too just did a bit of DDM upgrading on my "Under Tip Wing" fog/driving lights taking out the H-3 halogens and replacing with a pair of micro ballast H-3 H.I.D. capsules.

Wholly shit is right !!!!

Re: DDM Hi-Beam Upgrade Report - they're not just bright!

Motor, did your under tip wing fixtures use a regular H3 lamp or did they use the H3 lamps with the crimped wire and goofy little round aluminum disk attached (see attached photo)?

I'm looking to upgrade my lights and have found the ones I like but they use the lamps with the crimped wire. I would like the option to upgrade them to HID in the future.

Loren,
Wiring too bulb (Capsule) is special to the ballast unit and uses it's own style connector.
HID bulb is a H3 and has the disk at base tho a tad thicker requiring a bit of file work on the index notch & half round used in indexing orientation to housing. Once that done and bulb was a snug fit on housing placed a bead of Black RTV silicone around bulbs base sealing it up too housing. (Stock dust boots no long worked with the HID bulb)

* Finished install looks as shown ....

Outstanding. Just the info I needed before making the purchase. I like the install under the wing as it looks like it is tucked safely out of harms way.

Thanks again,

Loren

Re: DDM Hi-Beam Upgrade Report - they're not just bright!

DDM has a sale going on $17.50 for the Single Kit and $39.95 for the Dual Kit.

I'm looking at purchasing today....anyone used these (I have a 99 K12LT) and which color (brightness)?

I'm looking at getting the 55W 5000K and want to make sure it'll work. What about the bulb replacement....are they proprietary?

Thanks!

HID bulbs use the same plugs, 1 male / 1 female water proof connector on separate wires.
All the HID set up I have seen used the same plugs ... so NO, the DDM is not proprietary on bulbs used.
