Headlight conversion template

Hi all,

Can anyone direct me to a site or link where I can download a template to make a stick on RHD to LHD headlight converter for a 2006 onwards model K1200LT.

Re: Headlight conversion template

Kevin,

This is a regular topic on the British BMW Club website. The wisdom generated is a bit patchy. There are views that on the standard headlight, a stick-on option will eventually cause heat build up and a cracked glass. The bike manual says that altering the throw of the beam from UK/Ireland RHD to Europe/USA LHD is something a dealer can sort out, thought I've no idea what they do, and if it was for a single trip you'd presumably need to pay for it to be changed back when you got home.

My own experience leads me to question why to bother altering the throw. I travel in France regularly, and the most I've ever done is to drop the angle of the beam down a bit when travelling fully loaded. I've never seen any KLT riders from France or Germany in the UK who have altered the throw of their own headlamp to RHD.

When I had an R1100RT, I used a stick on converter, but found it gave such a vague beam, that I eventually stopped using it.

Might be interesting to find out what a BMW dealer does (allegedly) to alter the beam.

Re: Headlight conversion template

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I'm driving a USA spec bike and I find that with the new xenon headlight the pattern is very well defined and unfortunately the throw is into oncoming traffic and quite bright. During summer time it's not a huge problem (and perfect for continental trips) but I'm finding that with the shorter days I'm being flashed a lot by oncoming traffic.

I had an RT1200 previously and there was a lever to change the throw from RHD to LHD but there doesn't seem to be one on the LT. I'm aware of the suggestion that a stick on will damage the lamp but I think the xenon runs cooler so this shouldn't be a problem In any event I plan to stick it to a headlamp protector.

There was a posting of such a template for the K1200GT and it seemed to come from a manual but I can't find anything similar for the LT, hence my request.

Happy New Year.

Kevin.
