Re: hid bulbs
Yes. I rode for a couple years with a set of HID driving lights under the mirrors. They were the ones often referred to as "PHID", or "Eyes of God" on the HD groups, but the light pattern was terrible. The lens and reflector were made more for looks than functionality, and threw light flares all over. I had purchased a set of Hella Micro DE HID lights to replace them with, but unfortunately totaled the bike before installing them. I subsequently sold them to another member here, who did the 49 states plus Alaska and Hyder Seek with them. If you can find a set of Hellas without breaking the bank, do it. There are some others which seem to be good, but I cannot remember the names now.
If you do get a set, slave them to your high beam with a switch to turn them on or off. That way, when you dim your high beam for oncoming traffic they also go off, and come back on when you turn high beam back on. I had originally set mine up with an "Autoswitch", which used the turn signal cancel switch to turn them on or off, but that was not good when meeting traffic.
