HID Low beam problems

My 2000 LT is sitting in my shop at work naked. When I bought the bike (private sale) a year ago the HID low beam worked when you started the bike but sometime after that it would go out. The high beam works without problems. I had the nose cone off after I bought the bike and discovered a rats nest of wiring. I did what I could at the time and put it all back together.

I went ahead and bought two new relays because the wiring on the two that were there were in bad shape with badly crimped wires and other issues. This evening I took it all apart again and replaced the relays and soldered and heat shrinked everything. I turned on the ignition and "No Joy" with the low beam. I took the back off of the head light and found a loose wire on the ground strip. I tightened it and put the back on and now the low beam will come on. When I switch to High beam the low stays on like it is supposed to but when I switch back to the low beam it goes out. I have to turn the ignition off and then back on to get the low beam back on.

So here I sit with the bike naked and I am at a loss. Could the ballast be bad? Or do you think I still have a ground wire issue somewhere in the head light? I really don't want to put it all back together without fixing this issue but I have to get the bike out of our work shop tomorrow. Any ideas would be deeply appreciated.

Re: HID Low beam problems

Sounds like a trigger wire issue on a relay?

Re: HID Low beam problems

I replaced the relay and made soldered connections for the trigger wires and all others all though that doesn't mean there isn't a problem further up the wire. I will check that.

I swapped the ballasts and still have the problem so it isn't the ballast.

I know nothing about HID bulbs. Are they either good or not work at all or can they be bad and still burn sometimes? There is no black in the bulb indicating a burned bulb.

All of this is happening when there is no mvement so it isn't like the wires are moving with a bump in the road.

Re: HID Low beam problems

Anybody else have any ideas? I am headed back to work in a few minutes. I will replace the trigger wire to the low beam relay if I have time.

Thanks

Question Re: HID Low beam problems

What was the final solution? Inquiring minds wish to know.

By chance, did you accidently purchase a "latching relay" what stays locked until current is removed. Probably not, but thought I would ask. Usually they latch "on"

Re: HID Low beam problems

Have you tried running the HID low beam without a relay?
Have you tried temporarily switching back to the halogen system?
