Blown Low Beam HID???

05 K1200lt. Low beam HID working on last ride and when I pulled into the garage at night. Turned off bike, put bike on the charger. Two days later, rolled out the bike, low beam doesn't work but the high beam HID does. Should I look at the bulb or ballast? How long should a bulb or ballast last? Replaced the low beam just two years ago for doing the same thing.

Re: Blown Low Beam HID???

Check the bulb for any discoloration. If its blackened its the bulb. Its a crap shoot after that. Mine just went out also. But mine lights up for awhile then dies. Should be a ballast for me. The kits are so cheap now I plan on just buying a whole new kit and have spare parts left over.

Re: Blown Low Beam HID???

Hi guys.

Don't me to hijack your thread, but I'm been reading with interest about your HID installs. My low beam H7 is done, but what's the deal with the high beam H3 and getting the bulb to fit from the supplied DDM Tuning high beam kit into the original LT's H3 bulb holder? It has perplexed me.

Cheers to all

Paul, I used the CQ Light kit and had the same issue. I believe we all had issues with the high beam on pre-05 LTs. I had to dremel the bulb holder on the high beam to make room for the HID wiring connectors. I don't recall all the details as it was 3-4 years ago, and I now ride an 05. It is a pain but it will fit with minor modifications. be sure to remove the black plastic ring that comes with the HID capsule. It is not meant to be used on the bike.

Re: Blown Low Beam HID???

Upgrading your High beams to HID is definitely not a great idea if you plan on using your high beams as a "flash to pass."

There is definitely a large variance in pricing of HID kits these days. HID bulbs and ballasts are not created equally. Our motorcycle HID lighting products use OEM grade HID bulbs and ballasts to ensure the quality and durability of our product. Our HID kits are assembled in high tech ISO and TUV certified facilities. Poor quality HID kits can have failure rates of around 10% right out of the box and potentially last only 1-2 months. Our HID kits have a failure rate of approximately 0.05% (based on 9 years of selling HID lighting products).

Many HID Kit vendors often do not understand the the technical aspect of the product they are selling. They are attracted to low costs and boasted warranties. Many low cost HID kits being sold in the market are now using DC ballasts. These ballasts do not have rectifiers to convert DC to AC thus DC power is being supplied to the bulb. This will damage the bulb electrodes and greatly reduce bulb life. Damaged electrodes will cause the bulb gases to leak gradually and result in total bulb failure. HID bulbs do not burn hotter than halogen bulbs however they do put out a significant amount of UV. Our motorcycle kits use German made Philips anti-uv quartz bulbs to ensure that no damage is done to your motorcycle's headlights. Lower grade HID bulbs do not use proper quartz glass to save costs and will end up damaging your motorcycle's headlamps over time.

It still baffles me that people compromise their safety by gambling on lower grade lighting products.
