HID-Normal Failure Mode?

Hi guys, Had a low beam CQ HID installed on my bike a couple of years ago by the dealer while he had all the tupperware off.

Not having any experience with HID failure, was wondering if my bulb is out or my ballast has gone bad.

Does the bulb simply quit or start sputtering till it dies? When I turn the ignition on, the bulb will flash for an instant than quit.

Re: HID-Normal Failure Mode?

First check all connections, and the ground for the low beam. This is where we find the most common but easily fixable failures.

Carl, my CQ Lights HID low-beam (also 2 years old) died with the same symptom you describe. Replacing the bulb was all that was needed.

Re: HID-Normal Failure Mode?

Thanks,

Checked all the connections and they seemed fine. Worked great without any problems for the past two years.

Per Howard's suggestion, I will try ordering a new bulb (and a spare to have on hand). Hopefully its that simple.

Thanks Howard.

Re: HID-Normal Failure Mode?

Bulb Worked! Thanks Howard for the comeback and also the other tip about asking for the adapter harness for the new bulb.

What a pain putting the new one in. Guess if you want a job done right you need to do it yourself. Found that the dealer had drilled the hole in the dust cover in the forward area instead of the rear area recommended in Messenger 13's instructions. This created problems in pulling the bale wire forward and removing the dust cover to get to the bulb since the harness was in the way. Removed the ends of the bale wire from the plastic above to remove the cover. Fun time finding the holes to replace the bale wire. Also the grommet hole in the cover was 3/4", not 1". Had to enlarge the hole for the new grommet.

After installing the new bulb that has a metal base ring around it instead of plastic, found that there was a nylon washer left over in the box, the same size as the metal base ring. Not sure if I was supposed to place this between the metal base ring and the light housing or not. Seems to work Ok, but wonder if I'll have problems down the line without the washer.

Howard, if you're reading this - did you install this washer?

Thanks,

Carl

Re: HID-Normal Failure Mode?

You should check the RELAY in the harness, as well. I've had 2 go out so far. Ended up doing a dab of silicone around the edges, to keep it waterproofed. 2 years on the 2nd one now.
