Red face HID Problem - Never Seen Before?

I've been pouring through the Lighting Forum to see if anyone's experienced this HID problem before. Seems like this could be a first.

I installed a Fashtek low beam HID two days ago. Everything worked perfectly the first time and the instructions from Joe/messenger13 even made me think I knew what I was doing. That only lasted till I took it for a ride. By the time i went around the neighborhood a few times, the low beam was off.

Now after several rides, I've discovered ways to replicate the problem:
1. After starting the engine, the HID lights up - every time. However, once I get underway and the ABS system cycles, there's about a 1 in 3 chance the HID light will shut down at that moment, one second in the ride.
2. If while riding I do a hard or even a semi-hard stop at a red light, the HID will continue to burn until I then get underway again. It will shut off (most of the time) once I get underway, at roughly the same time interval that the ABS system would cycle - like one second into the ride.
3. This only happened once so far. I started the bike in neutral and on the kickstand. I checked the low beam - it was on. I then turned on the high beam and checked it. High beam lamp was lit but the low beam was not. When I then turned off the high beam, there was no light at all.

FWIW, once the low beam shuts itself off, the only way I've discovered to get it to turn on again is to shut the engine and restart. Sort of like the LT version of rebooting a PC.

Being a novice in the DIY motorcycle arena, I'm not sure where to begin, except I guess I'll be removing Tupperware soon.

I'm in way over my head on this and appreciate all suggestions.

I would run a dedicated ground wire from the ballast direct to the battery or as close as you can get it to a SOLID point on the frame. Usually intermittent electrical problems like yours are due to poor ground. BMW has undersized the ground wires in my opinion.

Thanks, MB.

Quick question: how do you connect a wire to the ballast?

I'll get to try this tonight.

Re: HID Problem - Never Seen Before?

When I did mine there were 2 leads to the ballast, the supply hot & the supply ground, and 2 leads from the ballast to the bulb. Rather than taking the ground from inside the light housing like Joe's instructions I ran a 16 ga wire to a solid bracket I found on the frame.

The wires from the ballast to the bulb carry something like 85 volts so don't ground that black one to the frame, keep them uncut.

Re: HID Problem - Never Seen Before?

OK. I studied the wiring for an hour using all my powers of ponder. I think I get it.

I leave alone the two wires from the ballast leading to the bulb. Of the other two wires, I disconnect the ground wire from the harness (I guess what those connector things are called) before the harness, then extend it to the battery. That way when I plug the harness back together, the external power will still run through it.

Just wanted to confirm this before I do it.

Did I understand this right?

Exactomundo. Sometimes one of the connections in the one of the plugs push back and don't seat properly with each other.

My eyes aren't working well enough tonight to deal with this anymore. Will check the connections tomorrow.

Thanks, all.

Also it is not advisable to use a frame tab as ground on your beemer ever. Insteads run lead all the way to the battery if you cannot tap onto a good ground lead.

Re: HID Problem - Never Seen Before?

From the responses to this thread, I had two things to check: the grounding and the connections.

Turns out both were correct.

First, the connector coming off the ballast to the bulb was loose. The slightest tug separated the wire from the connector. As it happened, it was the ground wire to the bulb.

Fashtek service is very responsive and will be replacing the entire unit as fast as I can ship it back to them.

Thanks to all for helping to resolve this.
