Bike is quieter at first

My engine seems to be a lot quieter in the first mile or so until it get warm and then it is noticeably noisier. It is a metal on metal noise. Im still on the oil that was used for my 600 mile service. I check the oil levels weekly and they are good. I just hit 5,400 miles.

I wonder if the oil was a little bit heavier, if that would make a positive difference. I never noticed this on my K1200LT.

The shifting into 1-2-3 is a lot smoother in the first few miles.., less noisy!

Re: Bike is quieter at first

Dan I switched to 20W50 at 4000 miles & I have not noticed any excessive noise. Here in Central Texas like most of Florida it does not get cold enough to need "Lighter / thinner" oil.

Steve, did you notice any difference in the noise with the heavier oil? Are you Using synthetic? Do you notice a difference when you change gears right after start up? That's when mine are the quietest.

My bike shifts very smooth the first mile or two. After it warms up it is clunk bang clunk if you know what I mean.

Dan I am using synthetic & No i've did not notice anything different between cold & hot running. I just like the 20W50 oil in the heat we have here. Today it is 91 so it looks like summer is coming soon.

Re: Bike is quieter at first

swithched from a synthetic that the dealer used on my first change to BMW 10W50 on the second. My bike did not like the synthetic, seemed to gulp it up, but the conventional is working fine. Re. noise level; put a set of black Remus on and I can't hear a thing. Just that in line six. Love it! Hope to get down into that heat in a couple of weeks. Trust the big guy will send a couple of high pressures over the north east.
