removing the Top Case Hinges ?

I posted this on the K1600 forum but did not get a workable response:

I would like to remove the hinges from the GTL Top Case and replace them with the hinges for the GT Top Case. The GTL hinges have a flat platform on the top. The GT are more rounded.

It looks like there are four (4) screws on the inside of each. Has anyone removed them?

Im trying to get rid of that (in my opinion) ugly back rest on the GTL. Once removed, I'm left with the hinge that is designed with a flat plate and hole. The hinge on the GT case is rounded and without the flat plate. It looks like it might just screw off and then I can swap it with the GT hinge. The GT top case back rest is much more compact and unobtrusive. Maybe!

Re: removing the Top Case Hinges ?

Dan,

Sorry I can't answer your question, haven't been there yet. But, is the upper half of the GT and GTL top case the same? Someone told me they thought they were different. It wouldn't make sense if they were.

Re: removing the Top Case Hinges ?

I think that they are very similar, if not the same. Looks like the hinges are riveted on and screwed in several spots so it doesn't look like a swap will be easy. I have someone who wants to swap back pieces if it can be easily done. Sort of like the black for chrome swap that I did a while back.

I might just remove the little piece sticking up that holds on the "back rest" and have the entire piece recovered.

Just a tiny bit of customizing and I'll be done.

Dan....I checked it out thoroughly at the dealer today. There is a different part number for the GTL hinge, because the lower end of the armrest screws up into it from below. The GT hinge however, is not available as a replacement part here or in Europe yet. My dealer also said the hinge changeout would be less than an hour labor. So I guess we just wait for the GT hinge to become available, then swap them out, and replace the padding with the GT padding....Shazaam!

Re: removing the Top Case Hinges ?

Thanks - I'd love to know how they are going to swap out the hinge. It looks to be riveted to the base.

I went ahead and took my back rest to a local shop that will trim off the nub that is left when you remove the backrest and then recover it. They figured an hour of time at $65.00. I'll post a picture when it's done.

Re: removing the Top Case Hinges ?

I got my back rest back from RDL this week they streached the cover too tight so Sandy's in Loveland Colorado fixed it for me. They are much cheaper than RDL but use very high quality materials. Thier work is flawless.

Re: removing the Top Case Hinges ?

OK - you showed me yours, here is mine.

The nub was removed and the open area was filled in (I don't know how, but it's solid) and recovered. They originally quoted me $65.00 but asked for a little more when I went to pick it up. We settled on $80.00 and I'm very happy with the job. Here are a few before and after pictures. It was raining, naturally so I took the pictured in the garage.

I'm trying to load the pictures. System's not cooperating.

I was able to load them to this thread.
