Top case rack?

Has anyone investigated installing a luggage rack on the top case? I do not see a BMW accessory. There is less space to mount one than on the LT and I was wondering if the the plastic on the top case could take the screws without fracturing. The LT allowed for a small duffel back to be put on top which was invaluable when traveling 2 up.

Re: Top case rack?

I use a Hondaline on mine.

You may have to buy better washers then the ones that come with the rack. Mine came with a different rack. Mount the front tips 1/2 inch from the seat back.

I would try your local Honda Goldwing dealer first as shipping might be extremely high.

The pictures were great. Thanks for the answers. I am doing early homework before next year's purchase. This issue is one of the attributes of my LT that I am sorry to see go away with the new bike.

Had a 1999 LT, loved it, and traded on a GTL. You will love the GTL. The GTL is a hot rod, almost as good a two up tourer, but a giant leap forward on the fun meter!

Re: Top case rack?

I ordered THIS BAG along with THIS RACK for an upcoming trip from Austin to Canada & back about a week ago.
The rack & Bag came in & I installed it this morning. Took about 20 minutes to do & was very easy. Here are some pictures with & without the bag. The bag is held to the rack with "velcro" but I will also use a rock strap as I do not trust just the velcro.

I ordered the "EXTRA" large washers with rubber pads to give the rack a bigger "Foot Print" on the top case. I also cut about 3/4 of an inch off the rear legs so the rack would be more level.

Re: Top case rack?

After looking at this thing all day I realized it was just too dang tall so I cut about 1 1/2 inch off the front legs & 1 3/4 inch off the rear. I then drilled out the holes & rethreaded them. Now it sets closer the the top case & looks Mo Better.

Here is the rack after I cut off the legs.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Top case rack?

Funny, I was thinking exactly the same thing about all those black and chrome tubular bar jobs that remind so much of my '67 Honda CL-90 rack. Well, as they say... to each his own. Guess thats why I don't ride Honda's anymore, not much new thinking, just mass produced wanta bees.

Re: Top case rack?

My thanks to all of you for pictures and ideas. After all of these months, one might think that BMW would have surfaced with an accessory top rack by now.
