BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

I have the grey 1600GTL (Has lots of chrome) and would like to trade as much of the chrome as possible with anyone who has a red 1600GT (Black trim) with black but would prefer chrome.

The chrome on the windshield, the chrome on the radiator cover, the chrome handlebar tips and the chrome wind deflectors. There might be some more, so if you would rather have chrome, let me know and we can do a swap.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

Tired of polishing it already, Dan? Just do like I do. Don't wash it. The shiny chrome will look like dull aluminum in no time.

Hi Lee,

You are right... I might have to paint it black if no one wants to trade.

Dan,

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

No, everything on the bike is stock except for the new windshield (California Scientific) hidden horn and hidden garage door opener.

It's hard to justify the cost of new pipes, but as many have said, the bike is just something to hang farkles on! :-)

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

I think I found someone who wants to trade. We should have it complete by next week. New bike with a new look. I still might go over a few pieces with the black composite. I do like the look. Should have it ready for the RTE next month.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

The swap was completed and I do like the lack of chrome. I replaced the windshield covers, wind deflectors, handlebar counter weights and the cover over the radiator hose on the left lower side of the bike.

Not everything is installed, but as soon as it is, I'll attach some before and after pictures. Probably won't get it done until Monday as I'm out this weekend and the parts are in a box.

Can't wait to see the photos .... My main issue with the GTL is looks : I totally hate the chrome accents, the topcase position (too far out) , and the horrendous backrest.

I don't have all of the plastic back together, I've been skydiving all weekend, but will try on Monday. I really do like the look of the black trim instead of the chrome. I will get some picture up on Monday after it is finished.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

Holy cow Dan!! Another post made me go look this up. Did you realize how much more expensive the chrome parts are than the black when you did the trade? You gave someone a great deal.

Chrome radiator hose cover: $160.95; black version: $19.58.

Chrome windshield trim (each side): $64.50; black version: 8.67.

Chrome plated plastic ain't cheap...

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

I was aware of the difference, but felt that if we were both happy it was a good trade. I've been on the receiving end of a lot of good deals and help because of this site and don't mind playing it forward. I think that most of the active forum members feel the same too.

I'm very happy with the end result, I don't have extra parts laying around and the difference is a few dollars.

Dan, Under the "For what it's worth" file...

I applaud you, fine Sir, for this exchange. I find the chrome on BMW motorcycles to be a poor attempt at appeasing the Amarikon market, and it just doesn't belong. I didn't like it on my '02 LTC, and the little bits that were on my GT. You've done me proud.

Awaiting pics.

Wow, I had no idea of the price delta. I just figured ANYTHING BMW would be expensive....

That chrome plastic is pricy!

Dan, that looks really, really nice. You may be on to something there. Maybe BMW will give future K1600 buyers the option - chrome or no chrome.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

Thanks - I really do like it and unfortunately, the pictures really don't show the lack of "bling."

In person it looks even less obvious! I've never been a real fan of chrome and I like the more subtle look. Wish that the GTL had been available in the red as I really do like that look with the black trim.

The black looks as good on your GTL as it does on the red GT. Nice job.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

To each their own, but the black trim looks really, really cheap. Had BMW put a black finish on it as opposed to the raw dyed in color trim they use it would be more befitting.

There is such a thing as using too much chrome, but I think the amount used on the GTL is just enough that it is tasteful.

Re: BLACK for CHROME Trade ????

Ah.... HD makes a great bike and I've owned a few of them. I even felt that the stock chrome that came on the ones that I had looked good. I don't think that I ever added any. I just never liked them as much as the last two BMW's. Different machines for different types of riding.

All bikes are a compromise and you have the figure out what you want it to do. For me, the grey K1600GTL just looks better with the black highlights instead of chrome. It was easy to swap out and it only cost me postage.

Ride on.......
