Talking Service Info

I just returned from CCR-11 after a 16 day, 5,000+ mile tour of most western states going as far east at Sturgis and the Black Hill of SD. The unit # 25 GTL ran absolutely fabulous two-up and pulling my Unigo trailer. The bike never missed a beat and my trailer hitch design and trailer lighting solution never flinched. My installation of my Valentine 1 buried in the front cowl where the R/H speaker module used to be also worked extremely well (especially on those days we had rain). All was sweet except for having to spend the bulk of one day in the Phoenix, AZ area chasing down a new rear tire which had worn past the wear bars after 6,800 miles. A passing note, the 190/55-17 rear tire used on the GTL is apparently common to only one other bike (Honda VFR-1200). My front tire is close to the wear bars as well, but it got me home where I can deal with that issue.

My big question is that I'm over due for the 6K service. Has anyone found the service info details anywhere that will aid me in doing my own service. I realize that a 6K is pretty basic, but its always nice to have a road map to follow rather than spending a ton of time going down blind alleys. Like my LT, the GTL will probably never be at a BMW dealer for service as I prefer to do my own and know my bike inside and out. My dealer is quite aware of my own service efforts and is helpful to some degree. But at this time he stated no "shop manual" is available yet.

Anyone been to this stage yet?

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Service Info

The 6K is an oil change & that is about it. I would also do the Final Drive just because it is easy insurance & easy to do. Do not forget about the "second" drain plug inside the engine as it hold the last bit of oil in the motor. The K16 has a dry sump motor. Also if you DO NOT have the "New upgraded " inner drain plug PM me your address & I'll mail one to you. All I ask is you send me your stock one back so I can make another "New type" for the next person. HERE IS A THREAD from the K16 forum about the "New Plug" another member had made & sold. I bought 2 & used 1 in my bike & gave the other to Garry for his GTL.

Wink Re: Service Info

Thank you both.

Just an update to my statement on the GTL rear tire. According to my local dealer the
190/55-17 tire used on the GTL and Honda are both the same size, but the GTL uses a code F tire versus the Honda's code U. The F code appearently designates a heavy reinforced sidewall and hence the two are not interchangable.

As suggested, I intended to replace the rear drive oil just like I did on my K1200LT and K1200RS.

Just make sure the rear tire has a "75" weight rating & you will be good.

Find PDF version of the K16 shop manual here . Also, your dealer should have an online shop manual within their dealer computer FWIW.

Hope this helps.
