Akrapovic Exhaust

When I stopped by GoAZ motorcycles today, they had both a GT and GTL on the floor with Akrapovic cans. Come to find out both bikes were the owners. Had my sales guy start one up, and in my opinion, it didn't sound all that much different. Slightly deeper/throatier tone when giving it a quick rev. They did look awesome - on both bikes. But $2,600 dollars worth....not so much. Too rich for me.

Re: Akrapovic Exhaust

I haven't heard them, but IMHO no pipes that provide such a marginal increase in performance are worth that kind of coin.

I'm hoping Two Brothers develops some cans for the K16. My dealer's parts manager has a K13 with Two Brothers pipes on it and it sounds wicked when he really revs it up - exactly the sound I'm looking for.

I'm happy to wait for next summer to upgrade the exhaust.

I have to admit though, after having owned a number of Harleys it's kind of refreshing to not have to upgrade the exhaust (and air cleaner, and ECM) on a brand new bike to bring out the performance...

Re: Akrapovic Exhaust

I would prefer a deeper sound as opposed to what I call a tinny high pitch ype of sound, but I can't see myself putting that much into pipes.

What surprises me is that BMW chose to add weight vs. looks on the exhaust system. I'm told, and can verify it on mine, because of the exhaust film on just two of the 6 pipes. Four out of the six are for looks. Weight could have been reduces and sound might have improved at the same time.

Re: Akrapovic Exhaust

What if one were to drill holes in the end of the four dummy pipes? Wonder if that would improve the sound?

I agree. They were obviously focused on weight reduction over the LT - less tupperware, no power center stand, etc - so why such a bulky and heavy exhaust system? Perhaps it might have something to do with meeting EPA noise levels? Maybe cost plays into it?

Since they are only slip-ons and not a full system, the HP gain is only 2.3 (Not enough to notice) The weight is 3.3 KG less (a bit more than 7 pounds) which is something, but not sure if you would notice. The dB at 3875 rpm is the same as stock at 92 db (according to Akrapovic's own info) Now the dB isn't reflective of the tone of the sound, which I think could be improved. I wouldn't want anything loud as that can get tiring after an all-day ride (and I've got another bike in the garage that was built for making noise) but something that shows off the sound of the six better would be a nice option. (but not at this price)

So what does the $2600 get ya? A cool look and bragging rights...

I'll wait. I have to believe there will be other aftermarket jumping in.

There are already holes drilled in the dummy openings. 2 in each opening on the GTL and 6 in each opening on the GT. That's the main difference in sound between the two. I'm sure that drilling more could increase the sound level, if that's the sort of HD approach you're going for.

Amen to that. Not to mention upgrading the suspension and replacing the heated grips every year when they fail. The only thing H-D has over the BMW is the sound system with CB, etc. They definitely got that right.

Re: Akrapovic Exhaust

For those who care to know, the quote from my dealer is $2,615 for the BMW version with the laser etched logo and $2,1,00 for those from Akrapovic with the colored graphic.

Re: Akrapovic Exhaust

The pirate www.piratek12site.net has Remus titanium and carbon exhausts for $1360. Claims to reduce weight by 25 lb per side. Had a remus on my lt and loved it. Will seriously look at getting one of these when I get the bike in 0ctober.
