Power outlet below the battery compartment on the left side ?

Seems like a strange place to put a power outlet.

Any idea what it is intended for ?

I just checked it with a cable and it is hot all the time.

Coffee pot, 12 volt vacuum cleaner,Passenger heated clothing.
Yes it is a dumb place for it & so is the front one. Every heated vest, pants etc... I've ever seen has wires on the left. I had to buy an extension for Sammies' just to reach the socket.

On the K1200GT that power outlet was for a canbus smart charger. not much good for anything else because of its location and current limitations.

The power outlet is on the right side below the battery. I assumed it's only hot when the bike is on or one minute afterwards.

You are correct and I still have a lot to learn about this bike. When I checked it, after turning off the key, it was hot, but that must have been because it was less then a minute.

Seems like it could be wired directly to the battery and made more useful.

Check out this thread at k1600forum.com to connect direct to the battery.

Thanks - I saw that article, but wasn't sure if that was exactly what he did. Looks like he wired up a different connection though. I'm thinking of using the connection that is there and just wiring it directly to the battery since it is there and the connector is the universal one that BMW uses.

I don't like having to go back and forth between the two sites, but there is a lot of information on the other site that is relevant to the K1600.

I chose to replace the OE socket with a "full power" socket (one of the K12LT trunk passenger outlets) wired directly to the battery, instead of reusing the low-current stock plug with an adapter harness.

In other words, I wired it the same as you are talking about (direct from socket to battery (of course, via a fuse)), but at the same time upgraded the socket.

BTW, the connector to the socket is not the same as on the older sockets -- smaller, lighter wires, different shape. The old sockets and new connectors on the bike won't mix (and vicey-versy).

Getting set to hook up my Fiamms and noticed there is a fused two prong direct to the battery hook-up on the bike from the factory. All you have to do is lift the seat and attach tender etc. there. Neat.

Actually, likely installed by your dealer (mine is starting to do that with deliveries, I believe). Definitely not factory.

Re: Power outlet below the battery compartment on the left side ?

I did the same to mine for charging the battery ( my demo was set up that way) and it it not necessary to raise the seat. There is enough slack so that it can be reached in the space below the seat and beside the battery compartment. Just plug in the tender.
