New engine observations

With the new 1600 cc inline six as the backround on my computer I have a couple of observations I'd like to throw out there.
1. With 5mm spacing between the cylinders to keep the engine width narrow. I wonder how they seal this area at the head gasket. Keep in mind that 5mm is .1969 in. or 1/5 of an inch. And the engine has 12.2:1 compression ratio, so cylinder pressures are going to be high.
2. The "composit" camshaft. If I read this right the camshaft is a tube with the lobes "compression-moulded" to the tube. BMW saved weight and this desigh may be fine but I'm not sure how comon this is and wonder how reliable it will be.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. It may have little merit, but it did give me reason for thought.

A six cylinder engine mounted laterally??

And they think the RT is WIDE??

Um, have you read any of the press materials on this??

BMW went to some length to brag about how narrow this engine is, despite the 6 cylinders, and the significant work they did to do it. The K16 will be roughly as narrow as many conventional 4 cylinder engines, and only a hair wider than the K13 motor.

This ain't no '79 CBX. In fact, in reference to your original comparison, it should be narrower than my RT's R12 motor.

BMW has quite a bit of experience with this form of camshaft construction in other applications -- it should be a non-issue here.
