Looking at a K1600

Hey folks,

Been riding a gold wing 1500 for 23 years and recently decided its time for something new. Ive been looking at the 2008 - 2012 gold wing 1800 a little, but really like the look of the BMW K1600. I know a few fellow riders with 1800s, but I just dont know much of anything about the 1600s. Im hoping the community on here can help inform me a bit more on how the 1600 rides, handles and how it would compare to a gold wing 1800 (2010-12). The two K1600s that I have my eye on are both 2012s. Any general feedback and pro/cons would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Looking at a K1600

I had a 2002 GL1800 and sold it for a 2012 GTL. Because I thought the GW was too heavy.
The GTL is @100#'s lighter but the CG is higher.
The GTL is quicker but the GW has more low end torque.
The GW is more comfortable for the rider and for the passenger.
I'm sure many on this forum will disagree with me but if I were to do it again I'd stay with the GL1800.
I must add that I am 70 years old and love 2 wheel traveling.

Thanks Larry. Just the kind of feedback I was looking for. Thoughts from anybody else??

You need to test ride the GTL for yourself, then you'll know if it's the bike for you.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Not Sure where you are, but BMW of Shreveport La. had a 2015 GTL on their lot.

Re: Looking at a K1600

If you get the K1600, I'd recommend getting suspenders for your socks; this bike will knock them right off your feet. That was my experience anyway; I had a 2013 Goldwing and now on a 2018 K1600 GTL.

The ride is comparable, in terms of comfort. Both bikes evoke confidence and feel very predictable.

The handling is, well, the same and different. The same in terms of both bikes being quite sporty and "flickable" for being 800 pound tourers. Different in that the K1600 has much more sportiness; it's 100 lbs lighter, has better lean angle, will do wheelies, etc.

As for comparison, what's your riding style? IMO the Goldwing is noticeably more stable on the highway with better wind protection from buffeting and what not. The K1600 is the "funner" bike and still does pretty darn good on the highway. It depends what you're after.

I must warn you though. Don't test ride the K1600 unless you're ready to write a check; this bike will steal your heart.
