K1600GT Starter...

I recently purchased a brand new 2016 K1600GT to replace my '04 Rockster, and the week after getting my 600 mile service done, I left my driveway to head to work, and the bike died. Starter would not start the bike again. That was on August 31. The bike has had the starter replaced, but the work done still has not been able to resolve the non-starting issue. Fortunately, I was loaned an identical shop bike, so have not been without the capacity to ride.

Anybody had to resolve an issue similar to this in the past? What was successful?

Re: K1600GT Starter...

What do you mean the starter would not start the bike again?

Does the starter spin, but not engage the engine?

Does the engine turn over, but not fire?

Does it try to start, but fail?

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

The starter spins, but motor does not turn over.
Simply whines and spins without engaging.

Re: K1600GT Starter...

So they've had your bike for 6 weeks, and still haven't solved this simple problem?

It's the Generator Drive (One-Way Clutch) not engaging as it should. BMW has already redesigned this part, so they know it's a weak point. For bikes built before 04/14, BMW part# 11 26 8 527 992 was superseded by 11 26 8 350 960. For bikes built after 04/14, BMW part# 11 26 8 535 820 was superseded by 11 26 8 350 926.

It's part #1 in this image:

See this thread for details, and tell your dealer mechanics to order a 11 26 8 350 926 Generator Drive, remove the gas tank and intake rails, and replace it. Or if they already replaced this part when they replaced the "starter" then just tell them to give you a new replacement bike and let them deal with it...

Thanks meese.

I have initiated communication with BMW North America, and requested that they replace the bike. My concern is that there may not be a new 2016 'Sport' edition still available to replace mine.

I believe that the one-way gear/clutch was also replaced with the starter, with no success.

Re: K1600GT Starter...

Sometimes it's bad parts, sometimes it's poor design such that replacement parts can have the same issue, and sometimes its inexperienced mechanics not diagnosing the issue correctly.

Either way, it's BMW's issue to own up to and solve to your satisfaction.

I'd be very surprised if it's any fault of the shop, considering that they've been doing this since about 1950.

I do expect that BMW will make it right, which means either permanently fixing it or replacing with a like machine (color, premium package and options, etc...).

I'll update when I hear from BMW, North America some time this week.

Thank you for the input. I look forward to sharing something positive as soon as possible.

Re: K1600GT Starter...

After getting blasted for mentioning a few faults of the GTL over on the 1600 forum I won't comment on this. Since I am looking seriously at a 13 model this is one more thing to chew on.

It makes me wonder just how many updates and revisions BMW has had to do to this engine/bike. And when.........

I was hesitant to pull the trigger on buying one as is.......at least with the LT I KNOW most of its faults.

cbxchris, I wouldn't shy away from the 16GT or GTL if I was you.

I expect this issue to be resolved, even if it's taking a little more time than I'd prefer.

I can't overstate how helpful my dealer, has been, btw. I haven't been without a bike; just without MY bike. They have done everything within their power to make sure I've been taken care of.

And the bike is truly an amazing machine. I put 73k miles on my old Rockster, and have plans to get many more miles out of the GT.

Well, BMW tells me that they need to send a 'corporate technician' to personally review what the shop has already attempted to repair my GT. Can't estimate when that individual will visit the shop,

So far, they (corporate) seem unwilling to even entertain the possibility that they may need to replace my cycle.

Corporate visited the shop last week, and the case manager (the second one) to whom my case appears to have been handed off told me that they would be in contact by Friday this week.

They (corporate) do not seem inclined to discuss much with me.

For anybody who may be interested, I have an update regarding my ‘16 GT:

It appears that the bike “had an issue when the timing chain jumped a tooth, the intake valves made contact with the pistons and the exhaust valves went out.” That is the explanation that BMW gave me via email.

They also offered to ‘repurchase’ my bike, which has 543 miles on it, for $4000 less than the price that I paid in cash for it. (I was told that I needed to account for the incentive that I received when I originally purchased the brand new motorcycle)

I declined their offer, and instead requested that BMW replace the engine as a part of the warranty, to which they responded with an offer to rescind the $4000 hit they were trying to saddle me with. I declined.

I just received word that the new motor should be delivered by December 5. Don’t know how long the install will take, but Thursday will make three full months since the bike died.
Patric and mwnahas like this.
