Thoughts-who has gone RT>K1600 or Vice-Versa

Hi. I'm hoping to get musings from people who owned 2010 or later R1200RT to K1600* or vice versa. I'm deciding which to go with right now. For me, it's heart vs head but I'm not going to say which bike represents which body part! For me, no thought will be thought of as triviL. Thanks!

Congrats on the new bike. Was going to reply to your RT question. Had 08 RT. I loved it. However, rode the K1600 and you know what happened then...............

I have a 15' RT and a 14" K1600. If I had to choose between the two I would choose the K1600 without any internal debate whatsoever. The RT is a fantastic bike but the BigK is extra-fantastic.

I know what you mean. I had a 2010 RT and I REALLY wanted to like it but I just never warmed up to it. I rode the K1200S all the time wile the RT sat unused. This bike.....still early....but I can't quite describe the feeling of riding it. Amazing doesn't quite do it. Need a new word.

I purchased a new '14 GTL in 8/2014 and 1 month later added a "used"'14 RT (769 miles, dealer buy back due to the suspension recall). Riding solo I prefer the RT, 2-up the GTL - have the best of both worlds!

I agree with the above post. One up I prefer the RT. Two up, the GTL. I am probably in the minority on that preference though.

I don't think you're in the minority. Most people I spoke with about my dilemma in choosing, including a lot of guys who work at the dealership, told me exactly that. For solo get an RT. I'll never know for aure I guess but for right now, the K16GT makes me very very happy!

I sold an RT and bought a used GTL. I am warming up to the GTL but it's taken a bit of riding to do so. The extra 200+ pounds is the part I don't like. i love the power though but am careful when and where I twist the throttle. This bike is amazingly fast. Wish list items are a tank bag, Louder mufflers and a different windscreen.

I went from a K16gt to an Rt and would never go back to the K16 unless I needed to ride two-up.
I don't see any need for the power unless you're into paying speeding tickets

I also rather have the Rt than the GT. I enjoy not having the extra 200 lbs. on board...I have owned a lot of bikes and for me the RT is the most complete balanced bike that BMW has made...For that matter any company has made...IMHO...But with that said, I respect those who like the GT, it is a fine bike also...Anyone what to talk about oil and tires...

Re: Thoughts-who has gone RT>K1600 or Vice-Versa

HI,

I've owned two K16 GTL's and love them. My question is has anyone gone from K16 to GS1200 LC or visa versa ? I keep getting attracted to the GS but start having withdrawal on the K when thinking of swapping.

I test roade a 14 RT and must say it was easy to ride and fun. The screen and protection from the elements is probably the best, but I did find it a bit of a 'hairdryer' syndrome when riding (too use to the K16 I think ) before the K16 I had a GL1500, BlackBird, GSX1200FJ, CBR 1000, Ninja ZX6R so my preference is sports tourer .... just need to watch the speed :-)

Always go for the 1600K over a RT in my book even Solo -

Cheers

Nick

Re: Thoughts-who has gone RT>K1600 or Vice-Versa

tomorrow - I'm trading my 15RT for a new left over 15 K16GT Sport. Want a bigger bike for 2 up riding.

RT is a great bike but a little cramped for tall riders. I'll probably have to lower the pegs on the GT too and maybe get a custom seat

I have both a GTLE and a RTP. They both have their pluses and minuses. The GTLE is great for long distance touring but you feel its bulk around town. The RTP is strictly a one person bike with limited carrying capacity. I am happy to have both and use them for very different purposes. The RTP replaced a Harley and I will never go back.
