Battery charing tender options

Hello all

I have a 2014 GTL and I am curious what is the recommended method for using a battery tender. I see some are using CAN BUS and others are direct to the battery.

I would hate to remove the battery every time I want to charge or use the trickle charger.

Re: Battery charing tender options

The dealer install my tender pigtail direct to the Battery. They then asked what side of the bike I wanted it to come out on (which side of bike faced a wall plug). All my bikes have had the tender hooked direct to the battery.
DanDiver and beech like this.

Re: Battery charing tender options

Whatever you buy use it regularly. Also I suggest you install an extra socket wired directly to the battery with a 15 amp fuse. It will be useful for heated gear, an air compressor and your battery tender of choice. Powerlet has several types of sockets to choose from or a OEM is nice. There is a stock OEM with 4' of wire and an inline fuse.

It is very nice. I put one on my S bike that has few sockets on it.
Here is a good charger and you can set it either for use in your CAN bus socket or in a non CAN bus socket. If you buy an extra socket and hook it up to the battery you can buy one of the non CAN bus rated chargers for a few dollars less.

This charger will monitor your battery and charge as needed. Tell you if your battery is dead as in one thread here. It will de sulfate a battery. I even use it on my seldom driven '82 izuzu truck, now have a # 6 optimate for that.

My dealer also agrees this one is the best for the K1600

Optimate 4
Mine is plugged in any time my bike is in my garage. Been using it for 4 1/2 years with zero problems.
