OEM (K1600) Metzeler Tires Report

I have new tires in hand, so was curious to see when the "dreaded cord appearance" would take place on the OEM Metzelers; and decided to ride them to the bitter end. Have been watching the tires closely, and after today's ride, the wear bar (circled) appeared - as did the first hints of the cord showing in the middle of the tire.

My impression: Wear Bars are not very good at giving much of a warning, and are placed horribly. In Metzeler's defense, I have read that they have changed the tread pattern slightly, to make the wear bars more evident.

Second Observation: On today's ride of 225 miles (on slab) the tires during the day went from no bars showing, to wear bars showing, to cords starting to show in very short order.

I checked the tires prior to the ride, and had a very strong hunch that the bars would be showing today though, so I did plan on this being the last day's use. Just very surprised that wear bars showing literally means "you're out of rubber".

6,101 miles on the tires.

This is what we have all found out about the OEM Z8's. I changed mine at 5,300 miles. The cords weren't showing but it was close.

Which tires did you end up installing if I may inquire?

Brian that is the reason I would not use that Metzeler. I prefer a tire like PR 4'S with the rain groove extending to the center to more precisely monitor tire life expectancy.

Ray, he posted on the K1600 Forum that he put on PR4GT's. I have the PR4GT going on rear of mine & both front & rear going on a friends K1600 in the morning.

I'm going PR4 GT's, as Steve said. And I also would have replaced these at 5,300, but wanted to do a little research. They really missed the mark on the wear bars on this particular tire. Wear bars are supposed to let you know how much tread you have left - not how much rubber!

Re: OEM (K1600) Metzeler Tires Report

I pulled a set of PR4GT's off JimE's bike yesterday with about 5300 +- miles on them. They looked to have about 1/2 of the tread left but Jim was leaving on a 3000 mile trip next week & did not want to chance getting stuck needing a tire on the road. We kept the PR4GT's & will put them back on at a later time to finish them off. There was no odd or uneven wear on either tire also.

Re: OEM (K1600) Metzeler Tires Report

Agree that Metzler wear bars give little warning of the end if the tires' lives, but I offset this minor annoyance against the fact that the tires perform so well and so consistently neutral up to the last day that they can be ridden. pR4's wear bars, on the other hand, are, in my experience, a superfluity in that, due to deteriorating performance as these tires wear, you know without looking at the bars when they need to be changed. When I get new rubber after pr's die, I always feel like my bike is new and rides so much better. When I change worn out z8's for new z8's, there is no change in the way that my bike rides or feels. The z8's performance remains the same from the first mile to the last. If I keep track of the miles that I put on them and consider where and how I've ridden since the last change ( for example, I just did a 4000 mile mostly slab run to the BMW MOA national rally as opposed to my usual practice of eschewing slab for more interesting and curvy back roads, so I would expect some flattening of the tires' profiles, but not so much wear as when the riding is mostly in the twisties), I get a pretty good idea of when I need to change rubber without relying on wear strips in the tire treads.
