My first voyage on the GTL; thoughts!

Well, finally got the bike out today and put 300 smiles (I mean miles) on her today. Did the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon today after taking the long way to get there and the long way getting back home; my thoughts are;

Handling (including curves and mountains): OH MY

Acceleration: OH MY

Figuring out the thumbwheel and other doodads:

Some of you all know how much I enjoy passing other bikes, especially HD's and Wingers; as I was passing a few HD's, I had the bike in sport mode and Dynamic and may have gotten on the throttle just a little too much as it felt that my rear tire may have turned loose of some rubber!

I ALMOST stopped by Ironhorse late this afternoon for some Prime Rib as I was in the neighborhood (that would have also given me a chance to really try out the Krista's) but I thought that I would head home and have the wife wipe the smile off of my face.

Anyway, I am loving the bike and can't wait to mount her again!

Re: My first voyage on the GTL; thoughts!

This bike does tend to shall we say bring out a competitive nature. I was following a pickup and giving a safe distance when a Harley passed me and settled in behind the pickup. What did that accomplish the pickup was going the same speed. Then futher up the road I saw the dashed center 'your ok to pass' line. The Harley guy gunned the throttle and I decided to pass too. He blew by the pickup and I blew by him just as he moved back into the right lane. Gretchen was laughing on the back. 2 up passing him as he was passing and when I glanced at the speedo I was well speeding just a little bit. I'm not saying exactly but It got up there so fast. Its just too much fun.

I passed a truck and three cars while touring in Europe. The GPS said I hit 203 kph. I will let you do the math. My wife said the wind almost pulled her helmet off. She was less thrilled with the pass than me! She missed her LT wind protection.

The bike does scoot on down the road...The speed and how quickly it gets there still amazes me. I really have to be careful and they almost raised the speed limits around here to 75!

Recent purchase of a 13 GTL myself. Handles like a dream..... but I am still learning how fast it really is. What a blast to ride, but I am still afraid of it, which is a good thing for me.!!!

Don't be afraid of it, but do give it a healthy dose of respect. Knowing your limits, and the bike's limits, is a good thing.

And see if there's a professional rider training course offered near you (and with the GTL, "near you" can cover a couple of states). Some dedicated training time, with you focused on riding the bike better, and getting instant, constructive feedback from a talented professional coach is always a good thing.

Even with all my miles, I still took a rider course soon after getting my GTL. It was worth it, just to get some time bonding with the new bike.

What's wrong with your C14? All road tests I've read show the Connie to outgun the GTL in everything other than a top gear roll-on.

Jeez o PEET! I figured for double the money and 200 more CC's, surely the thing was faster. Hey Brett ... remind me why you bought this thing again.

Hey, your 14 will for sure outrun the GTL, different bikes altogether which of course you know.

Bought it 'cause I still wanted the comfort of a tour bike but also wanted a bike that could still dance and sing in the mountains!

The creature-comforts are really nice as well.

If I was a bit taller I MAY have looked at a few other bikes such as a Connie or an FJR, doubt that I would have purchased either of the two but that would have eased up my restrictions.

At this point, I am very happy with the bike and I am sure with a few more day trips I'll settle in even more with the GTL.

That is just ONE of my favorite things to do while cruising on the GTL. I was on Mecca Pike which is a somewhat windy two-lane road that goes to Tellico Plains from Etowah, and before you get into the "meat" of Mecca Pike, the road is a wide and straightened out two-lane, I passed a pick up cause I knew that he would slow me down a once we got into the curves and when I passed him I don't he realized that I did pass him till I was in front of him!

He THOUGHT that he could run with me........................ Never saw him again after the first curve!

Oh, you didn't owe me an explanation. Just funnin' with ya. But I would hope you know that. I'm sure you'll be a very happy camper for many many miles on that new bike of yours. It's an awesome machine. And if I had just half your money...

Re: My first voyage on the GTL; thoughts!

You guys will be thrilled to know that I got a friend of mine onboard a GTL for a "test ride" since he has constantly cussed his HD Ultra with about $6000 in "upgrades" that still will not make it ride properly.

Net result: He is dumping the HD for the K1600GTL Exclusive. At one stop he pulls up to me and says.. "I was riding along listening to the radio and was trying to figure out what was missing on the bike. Then it hit me : I was not shaking, I was comfortable, there was no wind blast, and there was no noise."

Another poor soul brought out of darkness into the light !
