Top Case Rack Straps

I am going on a extended trip to BC Canada from Vacaville CA. With space at a premium with 2 up I want to utilize the top case rack. What do all of you that use this space strap things on to it with. I am looking for ideas that will not damage the chrome and such.

TIA Douglas

Re: Top Case Rack Straps

Assuming that you're somewhat adept at tying knots, I'd recommend simple, sturdy nylon cord. Doesn't look all jazzy and such, but you won't lose it, people won't be tempted to steal it (like some high-zoot velcro straps that I had--emphasis on the word had--a while ago), and, if you bring enough extra, when you get to an evening's destination, you can cut off the cord that you do use, bring your stuff into your room (or tent), and just re-tie with fresh cord the next day. Easy, cheap, effective, and won't mar the finish.

I use the Cee Bailey top case bag. It straps onto the rack. I wouldn't put anything that weighed too much up there.

Rok Straps,
I have two 48 inch adjustable ones & two 14 inch non adjustable ones. They are all you will ever want to use once you try them.

Re: Top Case Rack Straps

I have two narrow nylon straps with buckle ends that fit through the holes on the top rack. I bought them at REI. I usually put my sleeping bag up there in a waterproof bag, since it's lightweight.

Re: Top Case Rack Straps

If you don't have a top rack bag that has the straps that Velcro onto the rack, i go with Rok Straps, they stretch and clip, I carry several different sizes on my LT. from my experience you don't want to go to high on the rear rack as it begins to catch a lot of air. My bag gussets up pretty high, tried that only once, it just effected the ride of the bike too much and most bags just don't hold all that much. I you can find a "saddlebag", long duffle about 12 inch dia, pack clothing only (soft stuff) strap it to the rack with Rok Straps and let the rest drape over the sides. only then would have to worry about the abrasion issue with top case paint. Minimalist is a must riding long dist, especially two up! you'd be surprised how much you don't need!

+1 for Kathy's.

The bag has straps designed to fit the slots in the BMW rack. And for extra security, I loop the shoulder carry strap under each side of the rack and then over the bag lengthwise. This makes the bag very secure. No problems in 7 years and 10,000+ miles of use.

+1 on the Kathy's Top Case - it has velcro ties that go through the LT rack's slots and is good for lighter weight stuff on longer trips.

Re: Top Case Rack Straps

I use the Fieldsheer expandable nylon rack luggage with two side storage pockets. See my picture by my handle. It is well built comes with built in bungees and fits perfectly on rack, don't know its there while riding. This way it takes one minute to unstrap and has a handle to carry like a piece of luggage.

I use a Kriega bag. You can fit 1 or 2 us-20s or a us-30 on top, they come with tie down straps, fanny pack strap and back pack strap, they strap together and are 100% water proof.

Re: Top Case Rack Straps

Take a look at the RKA topcase bag. It has worked very
well over the last 4 years and 70K miles. The
ROK and strap suggestions are all good. If
I had to do it all over again, I'd still go with
the RKA. They're based in Santa Rosa, CA or at
least they used to be .
